Who's style has inspired you?

Penny Lane, the character in almost famous charmed me with her style and verve and her fabulous shearling coat. I read an interesting article in Elle about the costume design - and this coat was Penny Lane's armour...such a nice way to think of a coat providing protection.

I acquired this coat 14 years ago, and once the weather cools down, I do like to wear it for a bit of a rock and roll vibe. I wore this outfit last weekend. It really makes the outfit - which is otherwise a t shirt, jeans and boots combination.

So, do you have a character, real or fictional that has inspired you in some way?

My all time fave is the character Rachael Rosen from Blade Runner and her costuming inspiration, Babe Paley.

Motto: More Human Than Human

ETA: My fam is from the West Indies and Babe Paley is a familiar character to me. Rachael Rosen... just can't beat that motto. Hehe.

I follow some amazing real life normal women on Instagram who totally inspire me. They dress for themselves, share my love of black and encourage me to stretch my comfort zone. As far as someone in the public eye, I would have to say Lyn Slater (Accidental Icon) inspires my style. I relate strongly to her fashion choices, her ethics and her love of monochrome looks and Japanese avant garde. She is in her 60's and has a very cool undercut that is sometimes hidden by her stunning bob... I have to confess that she was the inspiration for me doing the same. She does inspire my actual style but more so inspires me that its ok to just be me and wear what I like.

Bijou I loved the movie "Almost Famous". And what a great coat.

My style icon's are Jennifer Aniston, Jane Birkin, Jean Shrimpton and Julie Christie. I also like Emmanuelle Alt. Lately I have been following a blogger called "Style Bee". She has a similar style to me.

Of all of these my favourite is Jennifer Aniston.

I take my inspiration from the women I see around me when I'm out and about, and, of course, from the lovely Fabbers here on the forum.

As a side note, I have always admired the style of real life women that I can reach out and touch. It seems so much more attainable to me.

I have often wondered why I immediately discount women on the red carpet or on the pages of glossy magazines. I might glance at them, but nothing more.

My number one style icon is my aunt, who died almost a year ago, I have also enjoyed the style of the character Petra Solano and her twin Aneska on Jane the Virgin. I can imagine wearing most everything she does. Her wardrobe is in my color palette, and in silhouettes I like. If only I were twenty years younger too! LOL!

Style Fan - Jennifer Aniston is amazing, she always looks fantastic and her style transcends fads, I could see a photo of her from 10 years ago, and it would still look good. My coat would look amazing on you with your colouring.

Sterling - you have picked three FABULOUS ladies to have as your icons. They are inspirational indeed.

Staysfit - I admire your style so very much, obviously a great reflection on the influence of your aunt. You stay true to what suits you too, I love your colour palette.

To answer your question: anyone who is polished, modern, "forgets about their outfit", has positive body image, and is confidant about how they look - inspires me no matter how different their style is to my own. Style is from the inside out, and that has to shine through.

I always have trouble pinpointing individuals whose style I want to emulate. I feel like I take bits and pieces from a lot of people and places. I don't find many celebrities' style relatable or especially inspiring because I don't have their bodies or their lifestyles. My style feels more instinctive these days than it has in a long time.

Relatable. THAT is why I fail to be impressed or inspired by women featured on red carpets/magazines. I just can't relate to them.

Bijou, I don't think you are lazy, and there is no reason to apologize. But if more fabbers put more info into their profiles, these will be more interesting to read. And the profile is very useful for quick reference when asked for advice.

However, this thread makes it possible for people to go more in depth and to have a conversation about a subject, so I support it.

In addition to the famous persons I have mentioned in my profile, I am no doubt influenced by family and friends and many others.

When it comes to movies, I have always had a fascination for the ladies (and their fashion, of course) in movies from the first part of the 20th century and may have "borrowed" a detail or two from them.

A more recent example, is the way actress Julie Christie was dressed in "Heaven can wait" from 1978. Her style was more soft and more "country LADY" than the styles I had seen so far in the 70s, and I found it inspiring. A few years later, many similar elements became more mainstream, with the help of princess Diana. But that movie inspired me to adjust my own style in a more feminine way before many others. (By the way, I can't say I would recommend the movie - the story was easily forgettable. However, Julie Christie's style is still lingering in my mind.)

I admire many women's style, both from the red carpet and from real life, but as Janet said, instead of channeling their style directly, I take bits and pieces from it to incorpórate to my own style. That said, and being rather new around here, I have taken a lot of inspiration from YLF members. Suz, Joy, SarahTheWhite, Janet, Srah, Tanya, Brooklyn, Sara L, Anchie, LisaP, and of course Angie are some names that come to mind.

I have such a love of 1920's style that any movie or show that features that era tickles my fancy. I loved the costuming in 'Fantastic Creatures'. However, that type of clothing is very hard to replicate with what is in store. I like Ellen Degeneres style/uniform and Ms. Mary and Sharon (who hasn't posted in a while) from YLF.

A couple of celebrities I look to for inspiration are ones who have similar builds to me and deal with the same 'problems'. There style isn't necessarily like mine, but I can learn from how they (or their stylists!) put an outfit together. Tilda Swinton for colouring that is similar, and Charlene of Monoco and Cameron Diaz for how they deal with swimmers shoulders. My Pinterest inspo board features a few of Saskia Debrau and Nine de La Fresange amongst the other random pics.

I'm not sure it has inspired me, but it has really stood out for me. This dress worn by Marisa Tomei in "Only You" (still one of my favourite RomComs).

Well apart from the obvious: Katharine Hepburn, who is my all-time style icon; I actually turned to the small screen, which is odd because I'm not much of a TV watcher.

When I was first starting out in my career (so, early 80s), most of my role models were older, eg Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown. So I was delighted to discover Stephanie Zimbalist, in Remington Steele, who was around my age but dressed to play up the intelligent and professional rather than the pretty and sexy.

More recently, the role models are easier to find, and less needed as I have settled into my own style. But I've loved Regina in Once Upon a Time (I want her entire wardrobe, also her tree wallpaper) and Stana Katic's character in Castle (first season she wore a DIFFERENT trench coat in every single episode!). Also Mindy Kaling: I don't know if many OB/GYNs dress as whackadoodle/trendy as her character, but she emboldens me to wear crops and ankle laces to work.

I think I am most inspired by street style. I like seeing the way ordinary people interpret trends and high street fashion. I think that I also get that inspiration from the forum. Like Janet and Dianna, I don't necessarily want to emulate a particular person's look, but I do pick up little snippets from lots of people that I log into my fashion memory bank for future use: like combine black with cognac (Jenn) or dark red with leopard print (Suz) or wear a white floral in winter (you).

And thanks for the shout out Sterling and Dianna. Made my Monday!

I have to say, I loved Stephanie Zimbalist at the time. Her sling backs and side swept hair totally inspired a phase for me, lol. That and her just so mannerisms

So many I can think of, and not always a woman, and not always a person! Alot of bits and pieces...

If I had to name one person, I think of Tilda Swinton, especially in an editorial spread she did in W about 5 years ago - wandering some rocky seacoast in strong shapes andRick Owens boots.

I think I'm most inspired by decades of the past. I'm with Runcarla in loving the 1920s, and for a number of years have sought out styles with a nod to that era- for dress-ups ( 1920s themed events) but also just for my normal life, like items with fringing. I really got into the Great Gatsby in 2011 when my boy had to study the novel in Year 10 ( Grade 9) and I read it to help him. He was 14 and English wasn't his best subject ( now 20 and studying engineering!). I hadn't understood the fuss about the novel before that but it was good timing because then everyone got excited about the new movie coming out in 2013, and we went to Art Deco Napier for the first time in 2014. Pics below:1. Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan in 1974, 2. Me at the historic house Rippon Lea in Melbourne in 2015, at a Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Garden Party. 3. and 4. I've showed before, Beatrice and Leatrice, pixie cut inspiration!
I wore my lovely fringed tunic(in the photo) IRL this April to show our Prime Minister and Minister of Health around our after-hours medical centre that I'm on the Board of. So even 1920s inspired on a formal occasion!
I get inspired by 1960s Mary-Quant type pics and 1970s boho, as well. No particular icons though, I guess I look at pics of Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton and Farrah Fawcett and Christie Brinkley from those eras.
