Who does NOT like dressing up?

In the light of this morning's blog post, I'm curious.

I lament our age of casualization, and wished the world was dressier. I don't want to wear cocktail dresses and heels each day, nor do I want to give up my jeans. But I LOVE to dress up and would enjoy having several Formal Dressy Capsules if I could put them to good use.

My lifestyle is extremely casual but I looooove dressing up. I wish I had more occasions to dress up.

I have a lot of dress up clothes but I always feel overdressed. Tonight for example I'm going out to dinner with a friend. I'm dying to wear my new heels but I KNOW my friend is showing up in a t-shirt, baggy jeans and sneakers. We have a 4yr old so when we go out as a family we're very casual as well.

My job (classical musician) requires me to dress up when I go on stage which is 2-3 times per week. However I'm only allowed to wear black so I feel limited there too. There just never seems to be an opportunity for me to wear my dressy digs and I'm bummed!

Mona, I think we should create some just for us. Why not? You and I could go on a dress-up "date" here in Kingston some night and pull out all the stops. It would be fun!

I miss hardly ever needing to dress up. As it stands, the last time I "needed" to dress up was nearly two years ago, with the previous two in 2012 and 2010. These were all funerals — in a very rural community, and there were other of my generation in jeans. So the need was at least in part for personal comfort / feeling of appropriateness.

Okay, I may have to have scones and strong tea with milk and sugar while sitting on the bench, because....

I do like dressing up, but I don't like not having the right things to wear, so that means I usually do best at medium-dressy things rather than killer cocktail. When the planets are aligned and I have finally assembled the right outfits for something really snazzy, then I usually wish I had more events (maybe different people!) to go to, QUICK! before things get dated/don't fit and so on.

I've found that this really depends on what I have in my closet- which is why your post today really hit home. If I have a fab dress or outfit that makes me feel like a million bucks, I looove dressing up.

The last time I had to do this, I had an idea of what I would wear... which I tried on the day before, just to try shoes, and it was too small! I scrambled and ended up in an old skirt and a top I grabbed from BR. It was ...okay. But special occasions come around so infrequently I was kicking myself for letting the chance to find something special pass by. And it makes it clear to me that skirts just don't feel special enough for me- team dress all the way!

My Choir mates think I like 'dressing-up' because I am dressed-up in comparison to most there. But true dressing-up I don't love- it feels unlike me and a little uncomfortable.

In Seattle, I'm dressier than 99% of the people when we go anywhere. I'm not affected by my environmental norm. I dress how I want to dress. When I tell Greg I feel too casual in what I'm wearing - Greg shakes his head and says, "you never look too causal".

Point is, I just want to wear ULTRA dressy stuff too. But judging by the comments on today's post - others are in love with their casual lifestyle.

I do like to dress up - but am glad I don't have to do it every day. It's more fun to dress up for an "occasion". And it's fun to see friends and family dressed up occasionally as well.

I love to dress up! My husband, on the other hand, hates to dress up. Other than holidays, some celebrations, and a few events throughout the year, there's just no way I can convince the man to put on a suit and tie for fun.

My real dress up occasions are few and far between. Even when I make an attempt to dress nicer than my usual walking the dogs outfits, such as when I meet friends for lunch, everyone else is still very casual.

I like "gallery opening" level of dressiness where I want to look special and could wear a dress and heels without sticking out but also could do killer creative smart casual. I don't enjoy dressy events with a strict dress code. I want to look appropriate and feel good.

Point is also, I'd like to wear more moderately dressy outfits outside of work--usually that means dressier footwear and paying attention to topper and handbag, but not ultra-dressy. I think that is fun and also gives me more practice at outfit creation that tends to carry over into being better at identifying my "style" for even dressier outfits, if that makes sense, so I might either discover some options I didn't know I had, or might recognize a fit or style that I should keep an eye out for ( or should cull from closet) and will also be more likely to stay current. Kind of practice makes perfect.

I am with you, Carter. I really like dressing up and it seems the only time I get to is for weddings. Those do not happen often enough. Hubster does not/will not dress up but I suppose I could dress up even if he does not. I just may try that next time we go to dinner. The family does not even dress up for holidays.

I do like dressing up and have very few chances to do it. For example this weekend's plans changed from dinner at a local golf club to BBQ at the neighbours - fun but wish we were going out for dinner! I don't, however, like to dress up often. I'm very happy that I have a job that doesn't require me to get dressed up. I live a super casual life style and like it

I love to dress up, and believe it or not, DH does too. I grew up with a mother who was dressy, and the 80s were a dressy time for my sister and me to grow up in.

I'm already dressier than 99% of my coworkers at work, and I really enjoy wearing more polished looks during the day. Cocktail dresses and heels are every bit as fun, at least a handful of times a year.

But my lifestyle doesn't lend itself to being dressy that often. I use work as my outlet for fashion, while the rest of the time I'm in gear (jeans and barn boots), doing work around the house or cleaning the barn, etc. When we do go out, it's nearly always smart casual.

Definitely team dressing up, if I could dress like Grace Kelly in To Catch A Thief I would be in heaven. Cary Grant would have been a bonus!!

I like to dress up but when it comes to formal dressing which I do not do too often, I always end up feeling that something is missing and most of the time it is. For example, no time to have a professional mani and pedi, and that always happens because there are other things that take precedence. My last formal affairs were out of town so that makes it a little harder.
I do prefer my comfortable and forgiving jeans but I cannot wear them every day.
I have to check the comments on your blog, I will do it as soon as I get home.

I don't like to, because of shoes. I have shoes I can tolerate, but not really walk in, so dressing up always involves being a bit unhappy and looking forward to it being over.

I have to say that I live in a very atypical area and my group of friends skews to the very dressy side when there are bridal showers or the likes.
Everyday life amongst Motg I am for sure the more dressed up.

I love to get dressed up. To a certain extent I try and do that every day. Like you Angie, I am usually much more formally dressed than my peers. I wear a blazer, belt and a nice pair of booties even when I'm in jeans going to the market. Polished professional is my go to look and I adore parties where I get to wear cocktail attire or, be still my heart, a black tie ensemble. I think we've lost something really special with casualization in general. I know I hold myself differently and feel differently when I feel "dressed." I wasn't kidding about the "p-pod" moniker. I'd like to feel so polished that if I happened to run into QEII or a head of state, I would feel comfortable being presented and introduced. Life is too short not to make each day special and wearing a wonderful outfit is a fabulous way to show gratitude and respect for life, for the blessing that we are still here!!

Angie, I join you in lamenting casual creep in dressing. (I used to joke that the next step was PJs in public and then it happened). I do sometimes feel social shamed about being more dressy than others, but I think I get a pass for being a foreigner.

Like others, I prefer dressing up for an event if I feel good about what I have to wear. If I can't get excited about my outfit, I might view evening events as a burden because at my age I often feel tired when it's finally time to primp and prepare.

So far, practicality has really dominated my choices so my style is neat, attractive, and casual. I'm always dressed appropriately if it's for something dressier but some of the most interesting and lovable people I know are always underdressed because it's just not their thing and that is FINE with me.

But...

I LOVE it when other people are more dressed than me. I never think anyone is "overdressed", I think they were so thoughtful to give us all something nice to look at.

Team Dressy reporting in. I am already considered dressy and especially like dressing up a bit more for the symphony and such. Parties have gotten more and more casual, even around the holidays. To go to something black tie would be wonderful, but I would probably feel overwhelmed trying to come up with an outfit, that I am out of practice. There is more pressure because that type of event is so rare.

I love to dress up too. I'm always the one at holiday family dinners dressed for the occasion, as taught to me by my mother, where everyone around me is in jeans. I don't care though - I dress to show respect to others, the occasion, and to please myself

I like dressing up on the rare occasion that I do. I do feel that I can add enough polish to casual outfits to make them look a bit dressier than the norm. I think adding a silver sandal and some jewellery can add extra panache to an otherwise casual outfit. But super super dressy - yes I do enjoy doing that a couple of times a year. Any more than that I'd be in trouble b/c it's pretty much the same every time
