White Summer Skirt Styling Ideas?

When I saw the good deals in the LikeTwice closing sale a couple of weeks ago, I decided to do my fall/winter shopping a bit earlier than I'd originally intended. While adding some cashmere and fine gauge merino to my shopping cart, this little white skirt jumped in too. I love the Swiss dot texture and gathered patch pockets, and I've been slowly adding to my soft white collection, but somehow I'm feeling stymied at how to style this skirt! Pinterest is no help, since I'm not a denim jacket or crisp button down kind of woman. I could just pair it with my various tee shirts and call it a day, butI thought I'd solicit forum advice as well. What would you pair it with to get a 'storybook gamine' look? My spring/summer closet is well supplied with silk and cotton woven blouses, traditional-style crew neck cardigans, a few short sleeves tees/knit tops, and a handful of light weight jackets, mainly in muted, cool colours and taupe/grey/navy neutrals.

Could you do a 2-piece dress look, pairing with a breezy white top? That seems pretty storybook to me.

A tee certainly works. Straightforward.

Maybe a top with a tie/bow, to echo the ties on the pockets?

Nothing fully formed springs to mind, though; that's all I've got right now.

While surfing Pinterest this morning, I stumbled on the Japanese "mori girl" subculture, and immediately thought of you. Do you identify with this at all? It struck me as a style similar to yours (if you strip out some of the ruffles and artifice.)

Looking for mori white skirt looks, I found a few things that might work for you. A lot of these are sweaters, which obviously won't work right now. Except for #3, you could probably replicate with lighter fabrics.

Here are some ways I've styled my VERY similar white skirt in the past. #2 is my all time favorite way to wear it. The top is a handknit lace shell. #4 is not my style really any more but is flattering.

And gah! I can't seem to find photos of it with either of the tops in 5 or 6 but I know I've worn them with it. Those are probably the most "storybook gamine" sort of pairings.

I was thinking something along these lines, maybe with your new beekeeper's sweater?

If it were me I'd probably want some color, though.

I think you have tons of tops that will look great with that skirt. Tucked in, wovens is what I am thinking. You will have to see how see-thru the skirt is regarding the tuck.

Jenn, I love the photos you showed but can't imagine wearing any of them in high summer! Maybe I'll have to do some transeasonal outfits later on, although Swiss dot seems very very summery. Anyway, I think the mori girl aesthetic is interesting, and I like looking at the photos (I find a lot of Japanese style inspirational, the artful waist surrendering and somehow stylish disheveled layers), but I'd have to tone it down to feel myself, if that makes sense. And I'm amused by the idea that anyone living in the forest would wear lots of white and beige and cream! Lol

I can imagine it with a striped simple tee. Or a collared blouse with short sleeves or sleeveless? Maybe even a waistcoat?

In terms of colour grey, soft blues and browns are all lovely. Pink can work but it can be too sugary.

What about wearing a drapey button-down, but instead of buttoning it and tucking it, tying it at the bottom?

T shirts will work but a blouse or a collared shirt would be better. The skirt can be worn somewhat casually, but a dressier top, and footwear for that matter, would accentuate it very well. My choice in footwear color would be white if your top has stripes or some other design, so that the skirt is accented by the shoes. If your top is a solid color, then I would say shoes either white or the same color as the top, all of that so that the skirt does not get "lost" in the rest of the outfit.

Other color combinations would work, too, but these probably accent the skirt the most.

As for nylons, I would go with white or neutral, or none. Definitely not black, as this would be too sharp a contrast, in my opinion.

I love the idea of soft neutrals with the white, like pale grays, taupes, or even tans and browns. Shades of brown would help it transition into fall nicely.

Maybe a leather tee in a color you like, with a bit of lasercutting on it to lighten it up.

I was going to suggest a soft knit sleeveless sweater, and then I saw Diana posted an outfit with exactly that. It depends on your climate, of course.
