White stockings on the loose!

Okay, Gigi! You asked for white stockings!

These are not carefully considered and planned outfits; these were thrown together a moment ago using pieces in my wardrobe in response to Gigi's challenge for me to be a 'trendsetter' in white stockings.

I tried to steer the outfits towards something age appropriate and away from being child-like. I like the combination of white stockings with other neutrals and chose a mauve, grey and black pieces. Soft browns would also work.

So now I throw the challenge open! How do you wear white stockings?

Well, I haven't worn white stockings since the 80's, but I think these look great! The sheer quality of the hose is essential, I think. I like them best in #1.

I like the sheer hose with a more natural toned garment, such as in #1. The contrast in #2 and #3 make it more ... dated.

I think you look great in these, but the other post asked about white tights. Maybe I'm just picking at semantics, but sheer hose are not the same as tights, IMO, which tend to be far more opaque. Sheer hosiery of almost any colour can be made to work, as you have demonstrated with the sheer white hose here. But opaque white tights? They still mostly fall into child/nurse/cosplay territory for me.

OMG that is totally working for me. It takes me back to the 80s, but strangely in a good way!

But yes, I completely agree with Echo that these fab looks are the furthest thing from opaque white tights, which are best left to Alice in Wonderland.

Hahaha, MaryK...people were saying when they last wore white tights, and that's exactly the last time I wore some--in an Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume. In the 90s, I think it was.

I'd agree, these are not the same thing--they look way better!

I love the dress in #1! It is beautiful and I like the white stockings.

Beth Ann- they're a bit of a blast from the past, huh! Next we'll be putting on our Duran Duran albums....!

Lyn- yes, I agree the contrast can make it look dated. Plus those boots are soooooo 80's!! But I literally threw these outfits together in minutes, just for a bit of fun.

Echo- I understood 'tights' and 'pantyhose' to be defined by being undergarments going from the waist to the toes, rather than by the degree of opacity. So technically these are stockings. Angie included a photo showing what I suspect were pantyhose that were quite sheer with polka dots. These days there are even spin-offs such as footless tights! Waving!

As other posters pointed out, you are cheating! It must be opaque white hose to qualify. *bzzt* (angry buzzer sound from game show) Having said that, I think your outfits are actually quite good, especially outfit 3. The topper is fascinating!

I have to laugh at the responses, because they're exactly what was on the other thread. "Dated"..."childlike"..."nurse." Ha ha ha.

I think you totally deserve points, because you wore them in an updated way (i.e. sheer) and made them look elegant! I especially love the tonal first one, what a great tunic/dress.

Okay I did contemplate buying opaque white tights once recently. I was also contemplating a puffer skirt (like the jacket but a kind of weird bell shaped white mini), and thinking that if I wanted to go the full on mod in space route meets winter white that would be the way. Then I remembered that actually I wore something similar when I was 14 for a Halloween costume and didn't really need to rehash it ;). I still think the opaque white tights can be done though. It will take an adventurous spirit who doesn't see the nurse/child connotations as necessarily negatives, but rather something to subvert.

Apologies, Gigi. I suspect that there are some trans-Pacific communication issues. I understand fashion tights and pantyhose to be synonymous, with the denier system used to describe opacity. In that regard I didn't think that these stockings were too far from the spirit of the challenge.

Thanks, rabbit and AG! This was just supposed to be a bit of fun with white stockings and seeing if I could make them work without looking like I was six years old. Tehehehe at your Halloween story, rabbit!

FL, I agree that some people use the terms "tights" and "pantyhose" synonymously. I'm just giving you a hard time. :^)

When I was a kid, "tights" were opaque stockings for children. "Pantyhose" was for adults, and it was always sheer and very thin. I don't know if there was even such a thing as "tights" for adults back then. So I still subconsciously use that terminology and don't realize that not everyone can read my mind. :^)

Fuzzy - the first outfit is TDF!! Wow, so elegant!! I also liked 3 very much!! You know how much I adore black, but I tend to be a low contrast person, so I love your first dress with more muted accessories and shoes. I think the high contrast takes attention away from the soft and gorgeous detail. But I honestly don't think you have it in you to look less than fabulously elegant!! Super job of showing it's never the element, it's the deftness with which it is styled!! Awesome job!!

Well, I think the first outfit is brilliant!! And you definitely showed us it can be done!

Rabbit, alaskagirl has one of those puffer skirts. But hers is dark. And I actually love the sounds of the white tights (opaque) with one of those...could be really cool.

I love these outfits - I think the sheerness of the hose and sophisticated styling keeps them from being childlike. Very inspirational!

fuzzylogic - I like those first two pins! The first one is kind of what I was thinking of, maybe with a dash of Twiggy thrown in.

Suz - that's cool that alaskagirl has a version of that skirt. I think I might have missed my window weatherwise (plus I don't think that skirt is still hanging out on the clearance rack at Marshalls where it called to me). But I briefly had the outfit all figured out, and then when I decided I should probably pass I wanted to look around in the store for a younger creative dresser to point it out too. (I saw a promising candidate with bright pink hair, but she would have been the wrong size for it).

Here are some other looks. The second one reminds me a bit of your first outfit fuzzy.

I love the first pic. Wearing light neutral tones in the outfit, the hosiery, and shoes really seem to enlongate your body. Very flattering!

Well done! I also have not worn white hose since the 80's. I think when it is sheer like this it is little easier to style into an outfit. I do like the additional pictures of the very tonal outfits with what looks like more opaque white tights. Not for me tho:(
