White film on black rubber boots?

So I busted out the Hunters which have been in the box since last fall. They have this sort of chalky whiteness on them. Anyone know if that's normal? I'm more worried about waterproof was than looks....

Maybe just from the packaging - rubber sort of outgases. Does it wipe off?

Yep, the manufacturer advises about that sort of thing. They sell a liquid to take it off.
Let me see if I can find it.

Yes, I had the same experience with my cute green Hunters, here in So. Cal. and thought it was caused by the heat. They sent me
a new pair, but the same thing happened with the second pair. Bummer! I no longer have the boots, but glad they have a solution for this.

Before Hunter came out with that treatment my shoe guy suggested ArmorAll wipes. Probably easier to find in your neck of the woods.

Ack! Vicki! I am crushed that you no longer own your boots.

I am in love with mine and I think this waxy film is called "blooming." It wipes right off for me; however, from the Hunter website:

Yes, that's right! I knew there was a word for it. Thanks for the links! They aren't really a fashion statement but I'd like them not to look moldy from the get-go.

Yep totally normal mine do that too. I think it's caused by heat? I've got some Hunter boot protector which I buff on with a damp cloth it takes a while as I have to keep buffing but gets the 'blooming' off eventually x

Um, I need this white film ON my boots. My Hunters are soo shiny, I hate it. But only shiny grey was available.

Also, on the subject of rubber boots, my buckles always fall off. I've had the grey hunters only a year, and this past month I ripped one off again. I see other people don't have this problem and their boots are old, old!

I'm with you, Rachylou. I only like Hunters that have a little "bloom" on them. I've been cultivating a bloom on mine for three years! Some shoes look better pristine, but Hunter wellies need to look lived-in.

But if the bloom gets out of control, I've heard that car tire cleaner works like a charm, for those of you who prefer shiny boots.

I really needed knee-high boots because these will be worn for fishing trips. Last year my mid-calf Bogs filled up with freezing water twice due to poorly estimating water depth! At least they stayed warm due to neoprene, but wet feet while camping is the worst feeling.
