White blazer, which one? Update with try-on

Hi everybody! I am still in the process of lightening up my wardrobe and have been looking into a white blazer.

I found a preloved cream blazer with a shawl neckline and placed the order. I thought the cut looks fine with extra weight but also when I go a size down.

Yesterday though I saw this double breasted blazer from M&S - the gold buttons may need to be replaced but I am now wondering if I chose the wrong cut/blazer.

Opinions, please?

That tuxedo closure and stance in #1 can be a little tricky.

Hard to say without seeing then on you/in outfits. You can put an emoji over your face if you want

I like them both a lot. I think it comes down to fit…. And Angie’s advice re stance is interesting.

I have two blazers similar to the second and wear them a lot.

Are you planning to wear the blazer open? If so, I think the double breasted style will be more challenging. That style never seems to hang properly unless it’s buttoned. The tuxedo one however could look great worn open, but might be harder to style done up with its low stance. I know, I’m no help.

Do you have any other double-breasted blazers? I personally find them tricky. All depends a little on body type.

I like the first one best except you may want a lighter weight fabric for summer.
Agreeing with Rachy, double breasted can be tricky. When you get them both. Try on and then evaluate.

I would try them both on, as it sounds like you don’t yet know which will better suit your shape.

I like the second one, but I have always liked shortish jackets and metallic buttons.

For me these are so different. I would consider what they will be used for. 2 has a more formal look to me. Also color, on my screen #2 is white, so it depends if you prefer white or cream. I, for example, with my cool skin color do not wear cream very well and prefer true white. Both look wonderful, but I guess it will boil down to what they look like on you.

I prefer #2 but I think it depends on your personal style. #1 reads as very classic to me but #2 is very modern, still has an element of classic but it also has some edge. It will look amazing over everything from jeans and joggers to a sophisticated and elegant dress.

I prefer no 2 but they are quite different. The colour of the second looks whiter. Also it looks more cropped. No 2 might work better with skirts. No 1 might work better with pants. I’d try them both on with a few bottoms and go with your instincts.

Just noticed Angie’s point about the stance of no 1. Do you wear many high waisted bottoms? If so no 2 might be better because the button on no 1 might sit lower than your waist line, which can be an issue if you tuck in your tops.

I have a love of double breasted blazers so I’d chose that one, but as mentioned above, its really about how it looks on you

It’s tricky without seeing them on you. I have a large bust so I find those low stances very tricky. But double breasted can be equally problematic. However, that particular double-breasted style has a nice angled cutaway that can make it work. It all comes down to fit on your particular shape!

Hi Minaminu - I actually like both blazers a lot. I am a slim rectangle and tuxedo shawl collars work brilliantly on me esp as I favor long over lean with both tunics and slim/skinny bottoms. The double breasted that your picked is similar to the VB/Balmain style but not as angled at the base. This style works best, for me, if the jacket is very fitted. This way when it's unbuttoned there is not too much fabric and hangs prettily. I think you really need to try them on. It does have a low stance but is very flattering but more casual. Hope that helps, but both very lovely choices.

I like both - and the second one is the same design Smythe uses every season. That said, fit is everything. I personally find DB styles need to be absolutely perfectly fitted in order to hang nicely when not worn buttoned up, otherwise it just looks wrong. I've always loved the look of a low-stance tuxedo jacket worn casually, with a t-shirt and jeans so ......they are both completely different to me. Buy both

2 with different buttons.

I would be drawn to 1 but the length would make my legs look short and that amount of white and drop would be too dominant in an outfit. I would get more wear out of 2.

Today I received both blazers and they will both be returned.
Apologies for the pics quality!

I tried them with the navy jumpsuit, so it is possible to see what sins they should cover...

The double breasted looks ok but the material is very cheap, the sleeves are too long and the shoulders have too much padding.

The lapel jacket is a bit difficult to comment as I received it all creased, the material has a nice flowy fit, however the sleeves are too long and Angie was right ont the stand!

Bonus of the year so far: today I went to the an art fair and finally bought a print that I have been eyeing since Jan. It was nice to see the artist and talk about her work. And tomorrow I will be double vaccinated

“What sins they should cover” lol. You meant “what loveliness they get to enhance”. Pity the double-breasted is cheap material, because it does look nice. Interesting about the other one—shawl collars can be formal or casual. I never know which until I see the item, but now I see. Thanks for posting the photos!

These blazers were a bust, but you have a better sense as for what to look for next. The double breasted blazer silhouette has great potential. Good length and flattering lines. Now you need one in better fabric, and with less of a sharp shoulder!

It’s a shame about the second blazer because it looks promising from the pics, but I understand what you mean about the issues. White, particularly in something as tailored as a blazer, is so unforgiving!

Well, onward…maybe your next find will be the winner.

@Janet, I am not an artist but art plays an important role in my life and has brought so much joy and relief during the last 18 months! Some people can buy a print online, I need to see it and like to talk to the artist. If I win the lottery, I'd ask for a pair of commissions!

Yes the double breasted one is almost right - and I agree a sound fabric that will look good and wear well is essential.
