While I'm on color... army green or citron for orphaned field jacket?

I have an orphaned field jacket in pale yellow that I was planning to dye army green - but then I saw this picture, and I'm wondering if citron/chartreuse might be better?

Army green - more classic, will go with citron hood/scarf I'm planning for fall.

Citron - more colorful, will pop with my many neutrals... but is it too modern/80s-ish for my style?

As much as I love citron, I feel like army green fits your style more. While it would be fun to see you mix it up with the citron, I think you'd get more use out of the army green.

Hmmm, an army green on a field style jacket is so . . . predictable. I'd almost vote for citron to add a fun twist and use another style jacket for the army green color to balance out the wardrobe. Of course, if you only have the one jacket up for dyeing - pick the color that will go the furthest with what you've got!

Team citron here - but pick a fall citron because it's a jacket and summer is half over.

If it doesn't turn out or get worn the way you hoped, you can always go darker and another round of dyeing, right?

I vote for citron, as it is a more lively and fun color. I have often been hesitant to buy brightly colored jackets, but I have usually been pleasantly surprised with how much I've worn them. I have a lot of neutrals in my wardrobe and have found that the pop of color of a bright jacket really goes well with SO many items I own.

Of course, only you know your individual wardrobe and the army green would go well with many items, too. I love the idea of dying an item to give it new life. Makes me think Mmmm about some of the so-called orphans in my closet...

I vote army- seems like it would be a more versatile color to work with, but that is me and my classic conservative nature talking.

I agree that citron would be fun and good for your coloring and style. The color of the jacket shown in the link appears very pea soup or baby food-ish, which I do not care for (could be my screen settings). But citron? I say yes.

I love both but I agree with Kyle that the linked jacket doesn't look like citron, at least on my monitor :). To me it looks like mustard (which I like, actually). Speaking practically, have you ever dyed something citron before? I would imagine it would be tricky to get the color right with dyeing, though olive would be easier, IMO.

Rae Im not a fan of army green since it makes me look like death warmed over but I think it would be alot more active in your wardrobe while the citron hood/scarf will be the bright pop of colour but not over the top and into 80's territory.

Wow, citron really pulled ahead!

Jonesy, I did find a fabric dye in "chartreuse" which seems like a slightly limey version of cirtron. I would be happy with that color, but I would also be happy if the current yellow color of the jacket turned the final color yellow-er.

I think citron would be striking, but I wonder if you're going to have any success trying to dye it that. It's not much darker than the jacket already, and the jacket has some browns in it which will make the yellow come out muddy. Of course, there's no reason not to try it and see!

how very timely....i'm dying a khaki vest a kind of army green/olive drab/apple greeny color right now!

i vote citron as well - the nice thing about overdyeing your existing color is that it has a good chance of kind of 'muddying' or 'complicating' your final color, which should make it a more versatile & unique garment than just going all '80's citron /neon. i agree with the other commenters who have said that if you get tired of the citron, just dye over it again!

For this project, I used Jaquard iDye in chartreuse. Fully detailed review here:

I was very happy with the results and plan to use this line again soon when I dye a cotton parka.

Thanks, Rae. I'm thinking of dying an old pashmina for fun. It has stains and the color isn't the best for me anyhow. Will report back what I use and how it goes.

You know, if you don't end up liking the citron, you could always dye it a second time. You couldn't go the other way around.
