Which cardigan do you prefer?

I'm heading our for a casual dinner with DH. I know which cardigan I chose, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on comparisons of the two very similar styles. The white one is a little slimmer cut esp. in the sleeves. (I could push the sleeves up on either one.). It's been cold and rainy most of the day but now that it's late afternoon the sun is out and it's going to try to warm up for what is left of the day. I'm wearing and liking a lot of blue/white/light camel this spring. .

#2 is a better fit on the welt and hips!

#1 is a better colour. I prefer the overall silhouette of #1 too. Wonder which you chose!

I like both, but based on the smile I’m going with #2.

The light camel looks warmer if that makes any diffence. Both look like what the older ladies wear to church as protection against the air conditioning. I like both with a slight preference for #2.

The white one seems more sheer over the dark shirt. For me, just that fact alone would make me choose 1. But if your top were a lighter color, I’d pick 2. I like the slimmer fit better.

#1 for colour and opacity. #2 has a nice fit, but seems too sheer for a dark under layer.

I prefer no 1 for the shape, colour and opacity. I’m also a firm believer that 3 buttons look better than 4.

Fascinating responses! The general (but not universal) opinion seems to be that the light camel one is a better color/better silhouette and the white one is a better fit ... on me.

Joy - I agree that cardigans can have that "older ladies wearing to church" look which is perfectly fine but not a look I wish to emulate. I don't have or wear many classic cardigans for this reason.

Aquamarine, and Runcarla - good point about the sheerness of the white one over a darker layer although I I kind of like it. I could also see wearing it over a white cami or tank.

Brooklyn - can you elaborate on why you prefer 3 buttons, and does that apply only to vneck cardigans?

p.s. I chose #2, the white one, but I am going find ways to wear the other one too.

I might have chosen based on my temperature needs. The white cardigan has a more feminine vibe than the beige one; depends on what you’re going for. Hope dinner was great!

Agreeing #1 cause it's more opaque. The second one could be ok with a lighter top under it though.

I think these are both great, they’re just different moods. I’d wear the second one to a weekend afternoon of live music with food trucks, or the farmers market in the park. I’d wear the first one to a more structured sit-down meal, or a movie, etc.

I love #2 better overall for fit and color. But #1 is a very close runner-up.

Suntiger, I agree that a white top under the white cardigan might be a little better than the dark top I wore under it.

Mary Beth what an interesting viewpoint. I think I see it too ... the white one is somehow more casual than the light camel one, but very close.

I was thinking of the “rule of 3” in interior design, which I think can be applied to fashion too. Because the buttons are done up, at least partially, you’ve made them a focal point. To my eye, 3 looks better than 4.

(When I wear brooches I try to group them in 3 or 5, not 2 or 4. Similarly, when I layer necklaces, I try to go for 3 or 5, or a multi strand necklace with too many strands to count, not 2 or 4.)

In this case fewer buttons also creates a deeper angle at the neckline, and I always think angularity is interesting.

Thanks Brooklyn! That rule of 3 is often applied to gardening too … when adding multiples of the same plant to a garden do 3 or 5 not 2 or 4

I like both of these! The white looks a little more summery, maybe because it is a little more sheer. The cream is a great neutral that probably goes with a lot.

Thanks RobinF! I keep thinking the beige one OUGHT to go with a lot but styling it has turned out to be tricky.

The white one is sharp, and a beautiful contrast to the blue shirt. I like this one better. The camel is also sharp, but I feel it would work with a lower-cut shirt in a color like black, red, etc.

I thought there were a couple holes in your sweater--then I realized there must have been a little dust on your camera lens. Phew!
