Where to shop for suits?

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum and I am looking forward to getting to know you.

J need advice about where to buy a suit.

As you can see from my username I come from Denmark. This fall I am going to the states for conferences.

I would like to buy a suit. I have a stop i Minneapolis close to Mall of America. I have heard of Banana Republic, J CREW and Ann Taylor.

I am petite, 5 feet, 2 inc, and topheavy with big bust and broad shoulders. I want a tight suit made of wool.

Where should I shop?

In Denmark er wool suit can cost you 800 dollars. I could pay about 500 dollars for the suit.

if you are going to be at mall of america, i would definitely try jcrew and banana republic. i would also try nordstroms. i haven't shopped ann taylor in awhile, so i'm not sure if they will have wool suits this season, the last time i shopped, they seemed to be almost all polyester blends.

People say J Crew cuts for a slim rectangle figure - which has kept me out of the place, so I can't confirm.

I like a tailered look and it is difficult to find, since I am shorter than the average Dane and danish stores do not carry petite. That why I have keep back on the shopping, knowing I was going to the states.

Sounds like you might fit J. Crew, and they DO have petite suit sizes. I've got a couple of suit jackets from there that are nice quality for the price and fit me really well. For top and bottom, I think you'd be looking at around $500.

If you are busty, like I am and my girls, J Crew will not work. Their jackets are cut for flatter chests and smallet shoulders as well. The Limited has a more "hourglass" cut in their jackets, but I don't remember them ever having wool. I will look around and let you know. Ann Taylor always has petite suits, and wool ones. J Crew does not fit curvy figure shapes. I wouldn't bother. You will probably have better luck at Banana Republic and Ann Taylor. I would also look at department stores like Nordstroms and Macy's.

BR and J Crew are the only chain midrange retailers I know of that reliably carry lined, wool suiting. As Amy has noted, JC is very curve-unfriendly (they never fit my butt, but I don't think they're very bust-friendly either). Sveta, Suz, and I have all tried the BR suiting recently, so you might want to look at our posts.

Ann Taylor's current "wool" suiting is more than 50% poly, which annoys me. =(

You could check out Nordstrom as well for brands like Theory and Tahari. They will cost a bit more than BR though.

One thing I would suggest is calling up the store and seeing if they actually carry the full line of petites. A lot of times the petite and tall selection is much better online. You could order them to your hotel and return the things you don't want at the store.

You will definitely need petite sizing so look for 6P to make sure the armholes and bust line are in their proper place on you. The stores you've listed are perfect. Banana Republic is not very generous with it's sizing at the bust generally, but you may have more luck than me -- especially since you are smaller. I'm not sure if there is a Macy's at Mall of America but you will want to try there too. I also love Elie Tahari - you should be able to find the store in the mall or her suits at one of the department stores.
