Where to Find Cute Casual Clothing Over 40

My friend and I (she is 49 and I'm 45) are going shopping today. We're both having trouble finding clothing for our age group/lifestyle (stay at home moms but always on the go). She is about a size 6 and I'm an 8. What stores have great stuff this year but not too pricey?

I'm on a shopping hiatus, so I haven't been perusing the stores lately but I wanted to welcome you to the forum. I'm *almost* 45 so I know the struggle...
I'm not sure what your price range is, but I have some luck at Ann Taylor Loft, Macy's, New York and Company (hit and miss), Gap....
I had written off Old Navy, but Kristen just scored some stuff there so you might want to check them out.
Don't write off the higher end stores. I'm starting to realize that my quickly aging body needs the polish and detail that the more quality merchandise offers. I never would have set foot in Nordstrom a year ago, but have recently become a fan. You can get some decent deals there, and I have come to realize that a few great quality items make me feel so much better than a dozen "value" items.
What types of styles are you looking for?

I like all the above suggestions.

I'm even older at 52, and I have good luck at Macy's. Macy's often has great items on sale/clearance, lots of departments to choose from (sometimes too many departments!), and with coupons or whatever I usually spend not much more than regular Target prices for much better quality merchandise.

I'm 56 and love fresh, modern casual style. Target, JCPenney, TJMaxx, Marshalls, SteinMart, Belks, Dillards, Macys, Ann Taylor are favorite stores. I agree with Queen Mum, don't rule out the high end stores like Nordstrom and Saks. It's fun to browse for inspiration and perusing is free! Once, I scored a free Chanel lipstick at Saks just because I wandered by their counter!

I'm 52 and echo the above suggestions. I especially love Macy's, too. They have great sales and a good selection. I also love Talbots.

At 43, I shop at the same places I've shopped at for the past 10 years: Gap, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Ann Taylor, Loft, Anthropologie, Nordstrom, Target, occasionally Talbots. I do tend to spend more now on quality shoes/boots/bags and basics, and I buy a ton of stuff online.

I'm more of a budget shopper but I try to be picky and buy items with interesting or expensive looking details. Outlet malls are a favorite of mine as well as Stein Mart, Marshall's, Target, Old Navy and sometimes I can find good sales at Macy's and Nordstroms. However, I also do what Angie says and check out every store I can. : ) A new discovery of mine for inexpensive accessories is Compass Trading Co.

I'm coming back to add that recently I have had ridiculously good luck at my local consignment store. I think I've been the beneficiary of others' shopping mistakes because a lot of the stuff is brand new, even with tags!

MaryK, I totally agree about consignment shops. A couple of weeks ago, I found a brand new Banana Republic knee-length, snap front, dark wash, fitted denim dress! I had been looking for the PERFECT denim dress for over a year. It pays to check out consignment AND thrift shops on a regular basis.
