Where to find button downs for busty gals

I am really in need of a workhorse white button down. However, I am a bit busty. Okay, maybe more than a bit busty as I wear an FF cup.

I also would like the top to not hang but nip back in at the waist. Would prefer not to have to use ties or belts so the top can sit under jackets neatly.

Any ideas if this is possible for a reasonable price? We may or may not be done with family planning, so not sure what the future holds for the girls.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but be sure you're not looking for a "white buttondown" just because it's on a lot of wardrobe essential lists. Also, not to be furtherly Scroogy, I see a lot of recommendations to "wear that with a great white buttondown" whether or not the color or style fits the person. I apologize for sounding grumpy because my use of buttondowns changed when the pants styles and rises and fits changed and the shirt proportions no longer worked the same. Also white is not my color but I do like black, or reds, or other darker colors. I also found that trying to layer over a crisp woven button down is hard for me as it really affects the fit of both garments and I don't look like the pictures. It is easier for me to layer over a silky fabric.

I do think it would be fun to try some in different fits and get some idea of how you plan to style the shirt--work or casual, tucking, untucking, belting, cardis & jackets or whatever. Of course it's a chicken and egg thing too--you want the right fit in order to see that it is style-able whereas the wrong fit may steer you away for the wrong reasons.

Try CarissaRose.com. My 22-year-old daughter is a fan, as is an over-60 friend.
The style my daughter likes has hook-and-eye closures - a brilliant idea that I wish mainstream manufacturers would incorporate for the rest of us.

Hi Thistle, I posted on your last thread but thought I'd reiterate. It's really an easy fix to add seams front and back to a button down below the bust line to nip it in. If I can do it anyone can. Unfortunately I have no boobage but huge shoulders and back which essentially creates the same problem, fitting the upstairs. If you can't find a seamstress, do you have a friend that has a machine? You could practice on DH old shirts or baste seems till you've achieved perfection.

Personally, I don't wear button-downs, or any kind of woven shirts pretty much ... ever, at all. So I'm going to second what unfrumped says - if you're wearing them because you like 'em, rock it! But if you prefer other cuts, there are tons of professional-looking work-appropriate tailored options that aren't woven button-downs, and I'm sure I and others have a lot of suggestions.

All that said, there's more options online than in stores, so your best bet is often to buy a ton of sizes and options online and plan to return a whole bunch of 'em.

I just find a shirt that fits the shoulders and buttons over the girls, and then take it to the tailor to slim down the sides and add darts in the back/front to slim the shirt if necessary to make it closer to the body.

I *really* need to find a tailor. No one I know has ever used one. Which leaves me with the Yellow Pages or YELP, and the YELP reviews for the 2 tailors in my area are awful.

What about a store with in house alterations? I know Nordstrom has this (but don't think there is a store in your area), but what about Macy's? Not sure if they do, maybe someone else can chime in.

Another slant is to look for a seamstress or someone who makes bridesmaids dresses, etc. She will really know how to sew and many times those ladies do alterations on the side. Just a thought, it is how it works in the small town where I come from.

What abd said--may not be advertised under tailor.
Also, hunt down some fab looking ladies and likely they are using a seamstress to get good fit!

I've had luck with Jones New York sold at Macys and Foxcroft sold at Nordstrom. Foxcroft tends to veer old/frumpy, however. I don't think it would *show* on a younger person like you, but since I'm of grandma age, I realized (too late!) that I need to be a bit more careful! Neither shirt I bought is boxy, so I can't quite figure it out re the Foxcroft.

Thistle, you need to explore Eileen Fisher. Seriously. Go spend some money. They have divine petites for pears and you will feel like a million bucks. It will probably not be cheap (although you can sometimes find her at Nordie's Rack) but it will be so worth it for you.

And the quickest way to fix the gaping is to sew shut the front and put the shirt on over your head. not so bad as it sounds.
