Where to buy “evening jackets”?

I am attending an outdoor wedding in California in April. The attire is formal or cocktail. I want to buy an “evening jacket” to wear over my black sleeveless jumpsuit. (A shawl is not warm enough and always slip off.) Is there such a thing as a cocktail appropriate jacket? I’ve been looking everywhere online with no luck. I would prefer something other than black. Any suggestions of where to look would be appreciated!

What's your budget & style preference? Peruvian Connection usually does some 'elevated' colourful ones - otherwise think @CarolS had some luck recently with velvet burnout ones?

My first thought was google ‘satin lapels’… but that may not be what you’re thinking. But evening coats *are* a thing.

You can check out "high fashion discount"... They have affordable jackets with lots of varieties.

The Real Real has a wonderful and varied collection of evening jackets, they even have a specific section for them. My experience with purchasing from them is that the items were in immaculate condition and barely used, I think second hand with an item like this is good, because generally whoever owned it was likely to have only worn it a few times themselves. If the idea of a second hand item does not appeal, you can search for items that are 'unused with tags', the prices are great value and you will find a complete selection of:
- faux fur
- velvet
- metallics
- brocade
- tweed

Bijou beat me to it… the real real is a great place to look for items like this. I have an event in April and was looking for a sequined top to dress up my “leather” pants, Found a ton to choose from and have one on its way…all for very little investment

Will you be on a beach or some other windy place? If so, you will also want something to cut the wind. What about a dressy bomber jacket in silk or lace? Or even a leather jacket? You could pair almost any color or neutral with black. For a spring wedding a light color or neutral would work. I second the idea of looking for something second hand. People are editing out dressy things that they have not worn the last couple of years.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definitely try TheRealReal and Peruvian Connection. It May be difficult to see from this picture but this is what the jumpsuit looks like.

Nice jumpsuit, would love to see it styled (if you're willing to share it with the forum)!

I'd personally go with a more cropped jacket to balance out the looser legs here, but that's not a hard & fast rule

I second Angie’s idea of large department store dressy sections, either IRL, or online to narrow search.

I’m late to the party, but I bought a beautiful tuxedo jacket in the Fall on Poshmark. Maybe search for womens tuxedo jacket or smoking jacket. I saw one on the Rack website in black or pink. You could also do a silky kimono. Check out Kim+Ono. (Can’t seem to add links today )
