Where do you buy bedding these days?

Where’s a good place to buy bedding these days? I want some of those giant square shams. Or do I need to rally and find a seamstress?

I don’t use shams, but my mother does. I made hers several years ago. They were very easy to make.

Angie, don’t know whether to laugh or cry re South Africa! I tried once to get a very cool piece of furniture from South America. They said they would see if they could ship to the states and then never got back to me!

My curtains and bedding are Kmart Martha Stewart actually, from back in the day. I bought them for myself in high school, crushing on Martha. I love them something terrible because they’re traditional patterns which have gone out of fashion. In fact, Kmart itself has gone out of fashion - they closed our store recently. I’d have to get a seamstress to make me new ones, and I’m contemplating it because I’m not tired of the look in any way.

Garnet Hill, The Company Store, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware have been good for us. And we have gotten some surprisingly good things for the ranch from the Better Homes & Garden line at Walmart. Target too.

Ours is mostly from Target and IKEA, with the good linen for the master bedroom from Parachute online.

I have heard good things about West Elm, too, and Etsy has a surprising amount of beautiful linen.

Oh, gosh! I’m a bedding snob from way back when a wedding gift set pilled horribly resulting in a very yucky bed. One spends 8/24 hours in bed, and I don't wear pJ’s. I bought 2 x $200 sheet sets that lasted 20 years and that set the course for bedding for me. These days it’s Frette bed linens. I offer conventional and European style to my guests. DH prefers conventional - fitted bottom sheet, top sheep, blanket, duvet. Currently the DS’s prefer European - fitted bottom sheet and a duvet, with duvet cover. Everything gets changed/laundered weekly. We have 3 queen beds and 6 full sets of linens. Everything is white. 2 sets are Portuguese flannel for folks who crave warmth in winter. These are from Lands’ End. 4 pillows on every bed. I collect pillow cases and have some with lovely white-on-white hand embroidery or old fashioned tatting.

Ok! I have to go look up Frette. I prefer Euro style for actually sleeping, but I love to throw decorative things on top of my bed. And I really love everything to match. Curtains, bedding, walls... except I’m afraid to actually paper/fabric the walls because it’s 100 year old plaster.

Giant square pillows? Like the 80x80 cm ones at Ikea? They have cases for them too. They aren't fancy shams, but some are cute.

For your walls, how about removable wallpaper?

Last year I bought some Coyuchi Organic linens from Sierra, They have a variety of square Euro shams now and the quality is very nice.(and from the bay area)

We also have a set of Performance Cotton sheets from Target that are surprisingly comfortable-nice and smooth. Also have some fancy Italian linens, Frette are great and often on ebay or online sales

Target does have some nice sheets. And I like Opal House. But I struck out there for the shams.

FI - I’m afraid even removable wallpaper could take down the plaster...

We have an old set of bamboo sheets that must be 15 years old and are soooo soft. I wish I could remember where I got them — I’ll have to see if I can find the tag, as faded as it must be. Those sheets are for our guest bedroom though, since it is our old bed (a California king, so not easy to find sheets for in b&m stores). When we moved into this house, we found a bed we really liked but it’s a king size and won’t accommodate the additional length of a CKing mattress. So our guests get a really sweet sleep when they are here — that bed is still amazingly comfortable.

Our problems with some super soft expensive sheets have been durability and pilling. I find that laundering in warm, not hot water, on a delicate cycle, and not washing towels with sheets really helps keep them nice and soft.

I buy my 1000 count Egyptian cotton sheets on Overstock.com. I read the reviews and pick the ones with a lot of reviews. you don't find the same brands from one visit to the next, but I've been pleased with the last several sets. I use the same sheets until they wear out - take them off, launder, iron them damp (cause, 1000 count, very wrinkly, but so smooth when ironed), remake the bed weekly. They do break down eventually and tears appear, then I donate them to the local Humane Society - lucky pups and kitties! I'm due for new ones, they last about 2 yrs.
I only hate the ironing after I have had a full house, as all of the sheets are like this. Guests, and sons, love them.

Big square shams - have gotten these at IKEA.
