These two internet-things popped up on my radar this morning, and gave me a fresh take on all things personal style…

Jemima Kirke’s closet on Coveteur. As I scrolled through the photos and read the captions, I loved what she had to say about authenticity and only buying things that mean something to you.

And then this was the next thing I saw, on YouTube: Elisa Goodkind talking about making everything your favorite thing.

Do we need a Favorite Things Challenge? I think I do.

I haven't thought of it that way in a long time. But I like Elisa's take on going with your heart. One of the best things my mother ever did for me is that when I was little--little, little--she began letting me dress myself. So I'd go out in maybe a Christmas sweater with a big, ruffly skirt and some clashing tights. I think this lends you a sense of self as you grow up.

And I see that in Elisa, and she is inspiring in her incongruity.

THAT was fun! Thanks Mary Beth for those links. I owned/loved/wore that giant cat face t-shirt Jemima Kirke was wearing! ahaha! Listening to Elisa Goodkind talk about her clothes and seeing the fun outfits she put together was inspiring! (I'm feeling a bit sad about the sameness that I see IRL, even downtown. )

Let’s do this! I’m envisioning this as one post per person, à la style lab, because I found it very interesting to see Elisa’s looks all in a row, and Jemima’s side-by-side.

So.. general parameters:

1 favorite item that you adore - clothing, accessory, shoe, hosiery, bag, hat, your choice

3-5 outfits. Or more, if you’re feeling it! It can be a WIW, a WIWW, or an experiment that will never step outside your door.

Everyone posts one post, like a style lab, by next weekend.

It can be something you’ve worn before, and that fits 100% with your current style, or you can sail (or drift) into uncharted waters.

Even if you never wear a look outside of the house, wear every look you pull together for at least an hour. The point of the challenge is to encourage, and maybe even force, creativity, with what is in your closet.

How does this sound? Any other suggestions? I’ll post the challenge when I get home this afternoon.
