Hmm. I've had good experiences with duplication: I have a stack of v-neck cashmere sweaters that are staples in my winter wardrobe.

But on other occasions I've duplicated a beloved item in a different color only to find over time that I kept reaching for the preferred color while the second-choice color languished in a corner.

The fact that the color is one that doesn't work well in your wardrobe make me wonder if it would end up being an orphan. Do you love it enough to buy additional items to help integrate that color in your closet?

Wash them first to be sure they come out okay - or go ahead and order the extra pair now (just in case) and then wash the other ones and make sure. Worst case you can return, right?

Tex, that's what the little voice is screaming in my head;-) I found these when I went to return the linen pants. I tried so hard to make those work because they were cute. But they just didn't make me feel fab.

I bought 3 grey, 2 white, 1 aqua. I also bought 2 navy but they are going back. The sizing was off. I mail ordered them all at once, along with another top that didn't work out. I wanted something that looked a little better than a tank top, was sort of feminine, and wasn't low cut. Voila! It's been in the 90s so they feel great.

They were an Angie pick.

I confess. I'm a duplicator. I only duplicate after I've purchased something and find that it's a winner. I also only buy colors that I know will work. I have less duplication in my wardrobe now that I've made an effort to make more mindful purchases, but when something works well (especially pants or jeans), I think it's stupid not to duplicate.

Buy them now and then hang on to them without wearing for a few weeks to make sure the first pair make it through the wash a few times. I may need these in olive.

If you're not desperate to actually wear both pairs now but you don't want them to "get away", wash & wear the first pair a couple of times.

I have that problem of having to decide when to launder something that might only be worn "lightly" and not typically ready for drycleaning or laundering but I may want to dupe. It is not as much a problem with typcal wash& wear casual items like T-shirts.

I am definitely a happy duplicator when it comes to such basics. I think Angie has said the same thing. I have been super glad in the past with most of my duplications. A few mistakes but in general many more successes, and the happiness of those outweighs the mistakes by a long shot.

A perfect pair of pants is rare. I say duplicate and enjoy them. It's not like they are $500, so I think the risk is low. Plus as others have mentioned, Athleta has a good return policy. There is no risk in buying but holding off wearing for a week or so if you want to be sure.

I have found two tops I'm quite happy with recently, and will definitely be duplicating in other colors.

Buy them and hang onto them to see about washing. Send them back if they don't meet the wash test or if in a few weeks you're over the fling.

I think the time to duplicate exactly is when you have laundry bottlenecks.

Do it. I duplicated a pair of black Gap ponte pants a couple of years ago because they were just that perfect and I never regretted it. Still wear both pair all the time and have never seen them come back in stock.

I do exact duplications if, like you, I find myself reaching for them all the time. But I agree with the group - buy, but don't cut the tags off until you see how the first pairwashes.

Socks and undies. actually I got a second pair of a great grey work trouser, 8 months after the first pair and I've duplicated mariner tees in identical and in different colour ways .

Mindful enabling...love that! I have ordered a second pair in black. I won't cut the tags on the new pair until I've run the current pair through the wash at least a couple times and I'm sure that this is more than just a fleeting love affair.

For the sake of completeness...

They washed beautifully. Even though the tag said machine wash and dry, I typically hang everything to dry. These were perfectly dry by the next morning. No shrinking. No wrinkling. And yes, I'm wearing them again today:-)

Duplicating my Rag & Bone PJ jeans exactly was genius - I'm never without a clean pair. They are so me and I'm indifferent to what others think of them. Then I got a third pair in a different wash and barely wear them. Lesson: duplicating same item in different colors or prints doesn't work for me.

I think basics are a bit different. You know your needs so well. Would you go into a tailspin if this pair was destroyed or lost? Do you tend to change things up a lot? That's what I'd consider.

Pants are my least favorite thing to shop for so duplicating a good pair seems like a great idea.

I got tickled at my DH today because he went shopping for shirts and came home with some duplicates. He even sounded like me when he talked about the price and about how polyester fabric has improved over the years and now feels good next to his skin. He used to insist on all cotton.
