When SYC becomes a bummer

I stalked this hat for forever. I was going to see if I had a little wiggle room next payday to get it, but now it's gone.

I had this skirt transferred into the flagship Nordstrom, before I found out about my father's dental bills. I envisioned it with my big cream sweater. My salesperson said it came in today.

Anna, that hat would be SO easy to knit. I think that should be your next project. If you don't have yarn for it, I'll give you some.

SYC is hard, but you can do it! And, I'm sure you'll find new ways to inject creativity into your outfits.

I get that they are things you've been wanting and their recent availability pulls at you, but neither is a core wardrobe item and I'll bet you can dress all winter without missing either one a bit. They are just pretty 'extras', really. Now do you feel better?

Ok, I theoretically could knit the hat. Any suggestions on how to get the mohawk to stick up? Spray starch? I have a cranberry colored yarn and a thicker cream colored yarn.

Are you using wool? It looks like the mohawk part might be felted. I think you can get an inexpensive set of felting needles at most craft stores nowadays.

Yes, you can definitely knit the hat! For the mohawk, I think you could try to felt it (basically run it through a hot washer and then lay it out flat in the right shape) and then sew it on. You have to use non-superwash wool yarn if you want it to felt.

By the way, this yarn will give a very similar look to the original, with the self-striping. Depending on your tolerance for wool, though, it might be too itchy.
