Angie goes on about how important turtlenecks are to her. So last year I bought two at Target, one black and one white.
I was putting away my neglected clean laundry pile and found the black one. I just don't wear them. I'm glad I didn't invest in a fancy one.

I have 2 from Target as well! Tissue weight? I wore each a couple times in Tahoe this spring I think, but I will say a Land's End black ribbed one I had 20 years ago I wore to death. Might be that better quality makes us want to wear it more??

I ordered a black merino t-neck from Lands End this morning. The reviews said they were thin so I think it will make a good layering item for winter. I am not sure I would have tried it had it not been on sale for $40 and then 30% off and free shipping. I figure if it doesn't work, I am not out much.

I did have one from Nygard that was a silk/cotton blend and I wore it to death - literally. Perhaps it is more the fabric weight and drape than price.

As an occasional (OK, maybe more than occasional) Target and Old Navy shopper, I must say that I find it helpful to "experiment" with styles from those stores and seeing how well I can incorporate them into my currently wardrobe and lifestyle before upgrading to a nicer version once I've proven that they can pull their weight as a wardrobe workhorse.

Yep. I strongly prefer to buy an inexpensive item if I'm trying something new. I know Angie does this at times herself (I remember she bought GAP BF jeans, which are low end for her, to try out the trend) so we're in good company!

I don't wear turtlenecks either, FWIW. I have one from the free bin in my complex that I'm playing around with and it never feels "right".

I generally don't wear turtlenecks due to the large bust issue. But in Fall 2011 I found a turtleneck by Halogen at Nordstrom that was on sale that I liked a lot, because it was more of a mock-neck (no bunchy fabric to fold over at the neck) and it also buttons down at the back of the neck so I can adjust how high I want it to be. That makes the concept of a turtleneck more versatile for me, especially as a layering piece.

I'm sure I'll be wearing it more often as the weather is becoming increasingly chilly!

I think it's definitely worth not spending too much if trying out something new. I don't wear turtle necks either, I just don't find them flattering on me. Maybe you can pass them to someone who can provide a nice new home for them.

I find it a good way to experiment with a trend, color or style I'm not sure about. A chance to try something without a big investment can't be a bad thing, right?
