Men can be confusing, especially the set that has no real interest in fashion, but are still opinionated.
My SO once told me he liked that I was a "plain dresser" -- I'm pretty sure he meant that he liked that I wasn't overly trendy, but that I have a lot of classic elements to my style. Right now in our area BF jeans and slouchy trousers haven't filtered down, but there is a lot of the oversized off the shoulder shirts worn with skinny jeans by the teens and 20 somethings and moms who raid their daughter's closets. He is not a fan of the look, probably because he finds it unpractical, and so far there has been a lot of teen incarnations of this look in our area. He has two sisters in their twenties who are girly girls and he often remarks about not appreciating them wearing revealing clothes, leggings as pants, insanely high heels, ect -- he finds it inappropriate and impractical, especially when worn places like a family backyard wedding.
He does not like it when I wear revealing tops, either.
However, he likes the BF look.
When I first met him I wore a lot of black, and he seems to think that my colors are dark colors. While he is kind of right, since I am a dark season, he still often eliminates anything bright from the color pallette when he buys me things. He will buy me the gray one over the pink one even if the pink one would have looked better with my complexion, because in his mind he doesn't see the pink "as me" --- in fact, I think it weirds him out when I wear the couple of bright, girly colored things I own. I also think part of it is that he is very similar in coloration to me, but a little more muted and tends to pick colors that he likes to wear, which are mostly dark and muted.
His own clothing is another battle altogether. He has a lot of bad clothes from a former relationship, and when I met him he was mainly wearing black tshirts and clothes from high school that were more than a decade old. Since then he has replaced most of his things, but he has a lot of challenges in dressing and he really needs some replacement tshirts, sneakers, and button downs atm.
He is all about the practical when it comes to both him and me, and yet he often tells me he wishes I would dress up more and things I need to go shopping more so I have nice stuff to help me feel good about myself.
