When do you start wearing sandals?

Do you wait for a certain date, the "official" start of a season or a particular temperature to break out your sandals? It's almost May and the flowers are finally starting to pop here in metro New York, but daytime temps are hovering between the upper 50s and upper 60s (F) and nights are back in the 40s. I'd love to dress "Springy" and have some new sandals I'm dying to get into. How much longer should I wait? Is it too early for linen? Too late for suede?

no, really, generally when its a consistant 70's out. but i will also say that my feet are the only part of me that ever get hot....

Although I don't wear sandals - if I did - I would break them out in the 80s.

Shoes like this, I DO wear - open heel and closed toe. I break those out in the 70s plus.

As soon as the snow is mostly melted! I inherited hot blooded feet from my mom and they scream for sandals as soon as the days start stretching out.

I'm good in sandals if the high will be in the 50's and the sun is out. Mea culpa, I'm indoors most of the day anyhow.

I see people in Seattle wear sandals, Birkies and flip flops when its 55 degrees - like Traci. But usually it's more common when it hits 60 plus.

Generally when the temperatures are 60F or higher. If I'm only going out in the middle of the day and it's hit that point, I'll wear them! But for all day wear, the weather has to be good.

I think this time of year is a free for all. I saw ballet flats, boots and sandals on the metro this morning, as well as jackets in a variety of thicknesses. Wear what makes you happy!

I'm like Dee. I'd say mid-60s. The problem right now is that it might be that temp during the day but the minute the sun goes down it's dropping down into the 40s. In the meantime, I'm really fond of boots over bare legs and my knees seem to be more cold-resistant than my toes.

I'm with Dee and Diana, around the 60s for me. I've worn mine once so far this season, during a short-lived warm spell - back in boots for now!

The very first moment I can. This year, that was March 4th (it shot up to 75 degrees). Generally speaking though, any day that's over 60 is a sandal day for me. That usually takes me from early March through early December. Although I'm happy to start early in March, I do try to be somewhat calendar-sensitive in the late Fall.

I started wearing linen this month. For some reason, that feels more like and "after Easter" thing to me. Southern quirk, maybe?

It's a personal comfort thing, I think. I run cold and I have beat-up runner's feet, so no rush for me. I'm with Angie and Rachy - not until it's in the 80's. I probably won't bring my summer shoes up from the basement until mid-May. Enjoying oxfords, loafers, and pointy toe heels right now (with no hosiery).

I wear sandals as soon as I can. My feet get cold easily so I switch from sandals to wool socks and boots within an hour but I love wearing sandals.

Traci and others, I have COLD feet - high five Linda. I was in hot Phoenix, AZ, last week and wore these white loafers very comfortably with cut-off long denim pseudo cullottes and a white crop top with cami. I also wore my black pointy toe flats with leggings and a tunic VERY comfortably outside in 90 degrees. (WITH cotton cami).

And no, I was not in a/c. I have great resistance to the heat, and zero resistance to the cold.

High five, Rachy. I know you get dressing this way in the heat.

For me, temps in the mid-70s are probably required. I think my feet run cold, relatively, although not super-cold. But then it depends on the rest of my outfit and where I'll be that day too. Will I be out in the sun or indoors? In the spring, I might do full length jeans plus sandals, or skirt/crops plus closed shoes, but not jeans/closed shoes or skirt/sandals.

I don't wear sandals but I can comment on the linen. Basically when the weather or my core temp permits. I love linen and would say in Chicago anything above 65 and it is summer and shorts weather.

I am in the cold feet camp. I don't feel like wearing them until it is 90 degree outside. Maybe 85.

I don't run cold otherwise. Just my feet.

In England we are still having some snow falling in the northern areas, just last night friends in the Lake District had snow on their patio. Here we are faring a little better and having sunny days but cool evenings once the sun goes down. I'm wearing linen but still in covered shoes for a few more weeks yet, though I'm itching to get into my red wedge sandals as I found the perfect matching bag the other day. I'm afraid I am old enough to still need to colour coordinate!

You guys are hilarious I'm into bare feet, bare ankles etc as soon as the ground is dry. Temperature has nothing to do with it. I'm not doing bare legs yet - but that's only because I'm still pale and colourless. Other than that - who cares how chilly it is! I'm not going to die from a little fresh air

I would wear them now, but my toes need a good clean up before I bare them.

I realized I have stages of footwear for winter into spring:
1. Winter footwear of boots, etc.--worn November-February or when it's rainy (Seattle) or below mid-50s.

2. Early spring footwear of flats, no socks--usually not worn before March. In March I only pull these out on mid-50s+ days when it's sunny. By this time of year, I'm tired of rain and wear the flats even when it's drizzling.

3. Sandals occasionally come out at 70+, but by the time it's 80+ I pretty much only wear sandals.

I can't believe those of you who wear sandals in weather under 80F (we read our temps in celsious so I had to check the conversion table. I am shivering just thinking about wearing sandals in such cool weather lol.

Temps in the 70s and above are sandal option weather for me. Temps above 85 (especially with humidity) mean sandals are FAR preferred over closed shoes. My feet don't like extremes.
