What's your wildcard this fall?

Catching up on blog posts. I'm too burned for work right now (tho I should).

Anyways, I'm once again trying to brainstorm up an idea for a wildcard. I don't have "don't do's," not really. My way is all about making it all submit, lol. However, I think I may have a possibility: Over-the-knee boots. Can't say I've ever owned a pair. Finding tall boots for my toothpicks was quite exhausting as it was (and it's a good thing my style is RATE, because those boots are gonna be worn for decades, man, decades).

So what's your wildcard? How do you pick one? What are your strategies for working it in?

That sounds like an interesting pick for you, Rachylou. I wonder what sorts of unusual outfits you'ld come up with.

Now to your questions: I don't know. I've never tried to add a wildcard on purpose (it happens whimsically if at all), so pre-planning one is a very interesting concept.

Usually my wild cards become such because I run across them and fall in love, and then have to figure out how they work with the rest of my stuff. I've never analytically sought out a wild card before.

That said, I can see OTK boots working interestingly with your style, rachylou.

I suppose mine will also be the OTK boots that I recently got. I have not owned OTKs before, either.

I ordered a brown faux leather skirt from NAS which I was hoping would fill the fall wildcard role. Alas, it didn't fit well and was returned. So none of my cards are wild at this time.

It can be a fine line between interesting and wild, I suspect!

Your over the knee boots sound like a lot of fun.

Don't have a wildcard in mind per se, we'll have to see what the season brings! My current wildcard is my beautiful pair of cowboy boots. Not my typical style at all, yet I get compliments without fail every time I wear them. They are a wild card that I ended up with bc my hubby bought them for me in Nashville and brought them home as a gift! Maybe our wild cards find us on occasion!

No idea what my wild card will be or if I will even have one this fall/winter ... unless ... maybe my hair counts? It hasn't been long in almost a decade, and the greying flowing locks is definitely against the mainstream ...

I tried some over the knee boots and loved them. I didn't buy them yet because they are always available to order and they were very expensive! I can understand why you would want them to last many years!,

My wildcard this fall was a chartreuse pencil skirt. It's a fun color but not an easy color to work with. I'm hoping to figure out some fun and colorful ways to wear it.

I don't have a wildcard yet. Mine will have to find me cause I have no idea what it will be. I've never had OTK boots either.

Love the idea of OTK boots, Rachy! Since you said they will be worn for decades, may I suggest that you make sure that they will coordinate with the walking cane you will be using by the time you hit your eighties?

I think now would be a good time to look for OTK boots, because they are really in style—so there should be quite a few options.

My wildcard item was a pair of khaki chinos. I have worn them a few times and still am not quite sure what to do for a topper to pair with the pants. I was planning on getting a blazer, but I haven't been able to find one I like. A long cardigan would look OK as a substitute, but that feels so grandpa-y to me. Life is so hard, ha ha.

Echoing the others who unexpectedly flush out their wildcard in the wild, for me that usually means behind a tangle of purses at Goodwill or hiding on a shoe rack at Ross. It's like spotting a fox on a country drive, it makes my day.

Actually I think the more enduring parts of my closet are wildcards that I fell in love with and than bought other supporting items to glue them together with each other into outfits. They usually were on some vague want list before (navy shoes, orange bag, photo-realist flora/fauna shirt come to mind), but I wasn't searching for them actively.

I think OTK boots could be good on you, as long as they don't feel awkward walking around.

I just bought my wildcard. Didn't look for it, as it found me. A pair of Theory butter soft suede, lined, light gray with a hint of blue, semi-slouchy straight legged pants. Comfortable and they read as possible frump on the hanger. Tried them on and have more experimenting to do, but I loved them with my structured, over-sized knitwear. A true, not on the list wild card at a very reasonable price point, encouraging my leap.

I....don't.....know. Normally I have a handle on the season by now. I don't think I'm going to get any of the things I tried on at Madewell yesterday.
Next weekend is Inge-fest. Maybe something will strike my fancy then.
But right now I feel like a combination of being at loose ends and not caring. It's very weird.

I think I just bought mine... a ladylike riding boot had been on my radar but not in my budget, until I found a pair of cognac colored Frye Dorados on sale today for $240 (down from about $500). Stil love my 10 year old black Frye Campus boots, but I'm looking forward to the variety!

PS... Anyone know how I might make it a pick???

Now I'm no longer sure of definition.
But maybe my high waisted faux- leather waistband pants. These are " my" style but still swim against usual style around. Or leather- front pencil skirt which I'm hoping reads classic and not hoochie-so again, my style but bolder, maybe.

I'm returning mine. The plaid mens baseball shirt was too heavy and too structured for what I wanted. No clue what else is in the cards for fall.

Rachy...I am surprised that you don't already have otk boots to wear with aprons and pants.

I have been flirting with them for about 3 years but I think I look like captain morgan.

My wildcard this year will have to be comfy undies, I just can't be bothered with worrying abt vpl or my muffin top this season so a three pack of Hanes (thanks, jeff bezos) are winging their way to me.

I think mine is a bright pink medium weight coat. It won't work for really cold weather but should be good for much of our winter. It's wild because I have only about three pieces of true pink ( not blush, coral or peach).

The wildcards I want to do this fall/winter season are :
Fur vests and collared items getting some heavier rotation.
Layering tights.
Wearing my black knee boots and booties of various colours.
Trying the sporty luxe trend.
Wearing the grid print soft pants.( worn once so far ,CPW isn't where I want it yet).
Utilizing my accessories more rather than buying more and only wearing it a few times before getting something new.

Keeping in mind that our fall has been unbelieveably hot, I haven't even looked at my "real" fall clothes - but I do have a wild-card anyway that I've been wearing! It is an ivory colored, sleeveless, lace top with a faux peplum, and an exposed black zipper on the back. I know it sounds weird doesn't it? - That's what I said when I pulled it out of the box that one of my sisters had used to send it to me (it was a gift!) But you know, that darn top looks really good with both skinny jeans and BF jeans - and consequently I've been wearing it probably 3 times a week! Jeans and sneakers cancel out the "sweet factor" of the lacey, peplum top! (Of course that black exposed zipper helps cancel out the "sweet" as well!)

My wildcard is my pleather culottes from Zara... definitely stepping out of my box with those babies! But I have to admit I'm quite excited at the thought of wearing them. Not so sure yet on stying - that will take some work, and possibly a purchase or two. You may see a plea for help!

Fun thread!
One is a black faux fur jacket with wide black grosgrain tie belt. I adore it and haven't worn it once yet. The other is a pair of tartan Converse lookalikes that I bought and wore to a baseball game Friday night. I received a ton of confidence boosting compliments, but they're still not exactly me, although I love them.

Rachy - I just bought my wildcard and it has not arrived, so I honestly don't know if it will work out. It's the Eileen Fisher Icon Maxi cardigan. I could see this as styled or with black cigarette pants and stompy boots and others are saying very versatile. We shall see, but sure is a different silhouette!! Oh! Lots of ideas here! I like the idea of a wild card being something you just come across or get gifted with, as an alternative to something deliberately bought that you know isn't necessarily part of the program.

It's just occurred to me I may look like Puss-N-Boots, in OTKs. We'll have to see...
