What's with the shipping at Macy's?!

I keep wanting to hit the 'order' button on the Nine West dress at Macy's, but the expensive shipping makes me change my mind! It seems when the dress goes on sale, the shipping goes up, counteracting any savings I'd get. I have a hard time paying that much, especially since I was planning to order two different sizes to see which fits best. The shipping would be $14.95, and since I'd only keep one dress, that's a lot!

I'm being a baby about this, aren't I?

Thanks! I saw it over there a few days ago and thought about ordering it.

Someone must have heard my whining, because this morning I looked again and Macy's has free shipping with a $75 order AND the dress is on sale for $39.99!!!

I don't think you're whining - the shipping is what causes me to not order a lot of things I'd love to have. I get super annoyed when I pay for shipping, then don't like the item, have to pay return shipping, and have spent anywhere from $12-$20 with nothing to show for it.

Oh good deal NK! I bought my dress on sale with a 20% off coupon, but had to pay shipping, so it ended up around $51 (I ordered a bunch of other stuff but returned it, so the shipping was high). But the dress is worth it!

Jenny -- I'm totally with you on paying the shipping, and then having nothing to show for it. Hate that.

I agree. Shipping often makes me not order things I might otherwise buy, especially if I think the shipping charges are high, which I think Macy's are. And then when I received my dress, it was sliding around in this enormous box. :O

Not to mention, Macy's must play around with their prices. When I first took a look at the dress it was on sale for 39.99. The next day it was 59.99. Grr. Glad I love it so much!

Yes, I avoid Macy's shipping costs at all costs. A little tip I've picked up: Place the order over the phone. When the operator tells you the shipping cost, tell them you weren't expecting it to be so high and that you will have to cancel the order then... unless they can waive the shipping fee? The operator will say no at first, but ask them to talk to the manager. It depends on who you get, but I've had luck with the manager waiving the shipping fee for me. I've also had the manager be stubborn and say no.

I realize it's not free to ship things, but sheesh, $14.95 was too rich for my blood. I wish they'd at least give free shipping days for card holders or something! Throw us a bone!

I have a discount code, but I can't use it in conjunction with the free shipping deal, so really, what's the point? I love it when stores have free shipping and discounts and I do end up ordering more because of it, so they're happy and I'm happy, right?

I rarely order online, but if I do and there is a free shipping for a stated ammount, I just make sure to spend that amount with every intention of returning stuff. I just did it with Kohls the other day.

Yes, Macy's more often than not loses orders from me bc of their ridiculous shipping costs. Really. It is insane. I just refuse to pay it. I've tried Marianna's tip and did have luck with that once. But not enough to make me try it again! I just go to the store.

The other thing I've done is order extra stuff that I know I will return to the store just to get the free shipping. Not convenient but gets the job done. Sometimes it is worth it if the item is not in stores.

Macy's really needs to get their act together. Their website is awful, customer service beyond bad, and shipping charges outrageous...

While waiting at the cash register at Macy's last weekend, a lady was complaining to the cashier that she was really disliking Macy's because they kept taking away benefits for cardholders, such as free shipping.

I definitely will pay a bit more to shop at websites with free shipping/free return, such as Revolve and Shopbop. It's so convenient, and the customer service is decent.
