What's the deal with hoodies?

We are just coming into winter here in Australia and I am noticing ... hoodies... What is the story with this? One designer has merino hoodies for $300, then this one is more biker style

I notice MaiTai's picture book has one in her capsule in ecru... and she wears it under a blazer with Hermes accessories...

Any comments/views/insights?

I wear them casually. My niece just got a pleather hoodie from Amazon. She is 16 and looks cute as can be in it:

I don't mind the look on others but find it too casual for me unless it's to use for lounge wear.

I wear a Lululemon one I the house for warmth and comfort. It looks good too, so I would wear it out on a walk or something. Actually, all their gear looks good, I think they are partly responsible for so many girls wearing workout gear all the time here, lol!

I think its 'ok' for a super casual look, but I only have one hoodie and its a cover-up, made w/alpaca I couldnt resist Only gets worn for a few weeks a year. Very snuggly, though

A year ago or so I was seeing knit hoodies--some zip in/out, some attached--as part of men's leather jackets. I think hoodies can be dressed up, particularly if made of a good fabric (e.g., cashmere), but in general they have a casual connotation.

I also want to add that I think there's a difference between zip up hoodies and pullovers. I have a huge weakness for hoods, though. Am eternally searching for a cool hooded dress.

I like things with hoods. The traditional, grey, zip-up gear hoodies, not so much.

But I love layering hooded things under jackets; I think it's a perfect and fun way to casualize a dressy blazer.

I have a Tse cashmere hoodie that I love. For me, the slim fit coupled with the v of the zip I find very flattering. I did try it layered under a jacket once for a copycat look a few years back. I also like the waffle weave texture in mine. Very luxe feeling.

I recently spotted a terrific hoodie in cashmere, very stylish and desirable - and expensive. I would definitely have worn it if someone gave it to me:) I'm not that much into sweaters with hoods, but they are great for lounge wear, I guess.

i cut off the hoods to the sweatshirt ones. the cashmere ones are so cozy in the winter. had to say if $300 is worth it or not. definitely judge by your own pocketbook. i've been paying crazy prices for clothing lately that i said i would NEVER EVER pay.

Raisin, I saw some stripey leggings in Lululemon's window and am filled with want. But truly, I don't need anymore Saturday morning wear.

There is so much cute, totally hostile-to-work fashion out there.

I like nice zip-up cashmere hoodies (although I don't have one). The look is skews casual, yes, but the fabric and the zip (vs. pullover) make it seem a little less so. A hood does not necessarily equal loungewear. You wear your nice hooded sweater on different occasions than your smart wool blazer, but it can still be a proper item of clothing, and not just scrubs.

I kind of like the look but it reads so casual to me. I would love to give the hoodie under a blazer look a try but I suspect on me it might just a look a bit contrived.

I always find things online that I like then I check out the back and inevitably there is a hood. In theory that is cool, but they never work for me. They add a strange bulk to my neck when combined with my hair. I have some Lululemon ones for working out that I will wear occasionally to the gym. And a cashmere one that is languishing in my closet.

I like hoods on genuine outerwear (coats) but not on anything else, such as vests or sweaters. On non outerwear, I find them to be annoying, having to get them out of the way when I put on my coat or jacket.

I had quite a hoodie collection when I began my YLF journey just 2+ years ago. I quickly learned that it was not OK for a woman my age to wear them with jeans. So I reserved them for loungewear. But I haven't even worn those in a year. I might wear them next winter again though.

I think hoodies executed from refined fabrics like cashmere sound delicious! I could see one with a modern, oversized cut, looking great. As a luxe sort of loungewear.

I just wore a hoodie with an otherwise dressy outfit to work. It went over well! I know it was not everyone's cup of tea on the forum, though. It's the sporty influence this season, like the silk track pants.
