What's in your closet with the tags still on?

I realized when photographing my closet the other night that there are a couple of items hanging there with tags still on. Hmm.

One is a lustrous button down woven shirt waiting for me to decide if I'm going to tailor it.

The other is a silk charmeuse Nanette Lepore blouse in a gunmetal color that I think is gorgeous, but it's too evening-ish for work and I haven't had an evening occasion for it yet.

Surely it's not just me -- do you have things with tags intact?

What a timely question for me ! I went to return a long wool vest and an expesive t shirt today that I have had for six months and never even took the tags off. The store is N hour away and I forgot the receipt.

It is also with shame that I admit that I have Marc by Marc Jacobs topper that I have never worn. It was very expensive for me and the only designer piece that I have ever owned . I had post partum depression when I bought it and I had just gone back to work . I almost don't want to wear it because it reminds me of an unhappy time.

Isabel, I had a bag like that once. I actually used to call it my "depression purse." I gave it new life by sticking some buttons and patches on it (I was only 18).

I haven't removed the tags from the now famous (or infamous) blue sack dress. I usually do not remove tags until I am ready to wear something, and it hasn't been warm enough to wear the dress yet.

Ah, but Maya, you just bought the infamous blue sack dress. I didn't specify, but I was wondering about things with tags on that have been in your closet for, oh, a while.

Isabel, so sorry to hear about the PPD. I have been there too -- not fun. Would you be willing to post a photo of the MJ topper? If it doesn't make you feel good, I'm thinking you should part with it. But if it's fabulous, maybe you'll decide to wear it and create new associations to replace the negative ones. Can we help you decide?

Oh, in that case no. Whenever I get something new, I am so excited about it I want to wear it right away. And sometimes I do. When I first bought the AT pearls (or rather, my mom bought them for me), I wore them around the house with my lounge pants and a tank top

Maya I like the idea of doing something with it to create new associations. It so bizarre how this one piece of clothing paralyzes . How weird.

I have a couple camis that are unworn. I have a black dress that hasn't made it to the closet...it is sitting in the bag because I need to post pictures because I'm skeptical of the fit. I have this gorgeous black short sleeved sweater with a crocheted front that I LOVE and I have no idea why I haven't worn it!

I have a purple dress/tunic that I bought to wear with leggings that I put on to go to a holiday party last December but ended up not going to due to inclement weather. It doesn't have the tags on it but I never really wore it

And I own an unworn wedding dress that will be worn in 5 1/2 months

Ohh, there is ONE thing...

I haven't taken the tags off of the killer black dress I got from Beacon's Closet. Which is stupid of me, since they don't allow returns anyway. I just don't feel comfortable wearing it casually. I guess it's good to have around for certain occasions, but it really isn't going to get much wear unfortunately. I look forward to wearing it when the occasion calls for it, though.

Isabel, if you can't give it new life, maybe try to consign it. I bet you'd recover a lot of money for it since it is unworn with tags and a designer label.

I perpetually have things on the front knob of my closet awaiting final commitment to tag-cutting (I usually return within a few weeks), but I do have a couple of older items too: a Nordstrom ponte dress I bought at the last NAS, and a couple of layering tees from J Crew Outlet (just removed those tags last week; bought them last...fall?)

I also have 3 pairs of shoes still in their boxes with the receipts tucked beside them. They are all dressy sandals and it hasn't been warm enough for them yet, plus...I am still on the fence about keeping them. I'll decide once it's appropriate to wear them.

Nothing long-term. I have a couple of things I'm planning to return (but now that I think of it - they're actually out in the car so I have them when I get near the store), but nothing that's been waiting with the tags on. Generally, I'm so excited when I get new stuff that I wear it as soon as I can.

I tend to have things in my closet still with tags if I've bought them on sale at the end of the season (right now two summer Sweet Pea tops and INC cargo knee length capris that I'll wear when it warms up). I also absolutely hate having to buy something on the spur of the moment for a dressy event so try to keep some basics for such times. So right now I've got, with tags, a little sheer black dressy silk jacket that can dress up a LBD and a long black Banana Republic evening skirt.

I had a skirt in my closet with the tags on it for about 5 years before I actually got around to wearing it. It's an olive green corduroy skirt with cascading autumn leaves appliqued on the side. I loved it, but it was definintely only for autumn, and my weight has yo-yo'd so much over the years, I was too big to wear it most of the years, and one year it was much too big for me. I was so happy to FINALLY cut those tags off and wear it last fall!

My weight is all over the place, so I often have clothes hanging there with tags on that are too large or too small that I just can't bear to part with, because I know eventually they'll end up fitting!

Does anybody remember the grey Adrianna Pappell(sp?) dress from last year's NAS? I still feel like a million bucks everytime I put it on so I'm never returning it. But I never seem to find occasion to wear it. Too dressy for my workplace, little too professional for outside the workplace :-S. Maybe one day when I'm given a significant promotion! But I still love it to pieces

I just cut the tags off and wore a silk Tahari shell that I have had for at least 3 years! I bought it on a super clearance sale because I love the brand. I still have tags on the two dresses I've been styling for upcoming weddings you all have helped me with, but I think I will keep both! Snip, Snip!

Absolutely nothing. Once I decide I like something I take every tag and sticker off before putting it in my closet or a drawer, and then make a point of wearing it ASAP. One time before my obsessively removing tags days I accidentally forgot to size S sticker before wearing a shirt and was thoroughly embarrassed when a friend pointed it out!

I have the same dress that you have in blue with the tags still on. I have not had an occasion to wear it. I kept meaning to wear it to church. Is it too heavy for spring? I would love to get more wear out of it. It is the only older thing with tags on.

Most things do not get hung in closet unless they are keepers with tags off. That being said I have piles that are being decided upon, mainly jeans at the moment.

I do this frequently, but more out of a neurotic fear that I'll lose my job and be destitute and will need to return what I can to bring down my credit card balance or reclaim some cash. Last fall, I bought a satchel at the Clarks store that I didn't remove the tags from for 3 months! My family was pretty poor when I was growing up, and I worked my way through college on a shoestring, waitressing and cleaning bathrooms, so I guess all the fear and baggage that comes with all that has never left me. Right now, I have a gray Banana Republic skirt, 2 pairs of Ann Taylor LOFT trousers and a white sweater from Bluefly hanging in my closet with the tags on. The Bluefly sweater is going back--it's just too sheer. (Let me know if you have any tips on where I can find a white sweater that is not completely see-through!) I just took the tags off a black JCrew cardigan and another pair of ATL trousers this morning and wore them to work today, mostly compelled by desperation because most of my other trousers are falling apart. And wow, it really felt good! The trousers look great, I almost think I appreciate them more because I made myself wait when I yearned to wear them for so long.

My problem is other.. I buy, remove the tags and use right away, use a few times and then I start thinking it was not the best option..

I have to ask though - do you guys have really long returns policies? I've found most stores here seem to have either 7, 14 or 28 days maximum for returns... so if I don't decided immediately to return, I generally can't because I don't go up to the nearest shopping town every single week...

Only one dress at the moment. It goes up and down for me. Tags are generally on until I wear my clothes for the first time. After shopping, there are a few items for a few weeks, and then it is no tags period for a while.

I have the same question as Theresa. What is the standard returns policy in the States? Here it is either 7 or 30 days.

And there is nothing in my wardrobe with tags on.

I'm pround to say nothing. Once I have made a decision I snip the tags off wash it (then if it washes terribly I can return it) and get it in the wardrobe ready to wear x

I have a few skirts with tags...that are at least a year old. I have a bad habit of falling for skirts and dreaming of all these possible outfits...but never making those outfits a reality. I also have a couple dresses and a top or two with tags...but those are more recent.

Tansie, Theresa...places like Target have a 3 month return policy, and I've recently started buying things from Anthropologie which seems to have no time limit (though they only give you store credit). For me, its not so much a debate on whether to keep or return, that usually gets decided pretty quickly...its that tags get cut off when I wear them for the first time and that could be weeks or months after purchase.
