What's a modern classic look for scarves and earrings these days?

Hi everyone,

Two "updating classics" questions for the group:

Scarves - what I'm noticing is that scarves are either quite full, or infinity style (or both). Not so much the long bits hanging down anymore. Colors seem to be neutral or muted, not seeing many 'statement' scarves; patterns, there are lots of checks, plaids. Does this match up to what you are seeing? If you were going for an updated scarf look, what would you get?
Earrings - I've been wearing my crystal studs a lot; I used to wear hoops all the time when I wanted something a little more noticeable, but I am not seeing hoops much these days. What's the modern equivalent of the hoop? I have dangling tear-drop shaped hoop-esque ones. (similar to ones in link, but silver). What do you think?

I think you're right about scarves. I have pretty much always preferred to wear them in the "new" way. Infinities rarely work for me (something about the typical length is wrong and they are not adjustable) but I love a big scarf folded so that it makes a kind of "triangle" in front or a "bib" with an angle. This has always been my favourite way to wear a scarf and it will probably remain so.

I am not sure about earrings. I don't really wear anything other than studs these days except for special occasion.

I usually wear my silver studs because they are easy to wear, plus I usually forget to take them off. I like teeny drop earrings but they are hard to find and never wear long earrings which is weird because in the 80s that's all I wore.

I agree with you about scarves. The young ladies here at work love to wear their infinity scarves at the workplace, but I usually wear my scarves outdoors. I haven't donned a scarf indoors in quite a while. (The last time I did was in the 90s when the smaller square which you tied around your neck.)

Mise en Dior style earrings are a current fixation of mine. I keep reaching for my baublebar version instead of my "real" jewelry. On my 65-year-old ears, they probably look very matronly, but I think they're great on the likes of Emma Watson:

I mostly see infinity worn and loads in stores. I too do not ear those big infinity ones as my neck is short. But one thing I do is take a thinner long scarf and tie the ends together. wrap in twice and it makes a thin infinity scarf. BUT the scarf has to be long and thin for it to work well.

old chic - I have been obsessed with those Dior earrings since I first laid eyes on them. Waited for an affordable knock-off to appear, and finally bought a black/faceted pair a few months ago. Love them. Not matronly at all !

I haven't been wearing my scarves as much this year because I think I maybe OD'd on them over the past few years. But when I do I tie them infinity-style or bandana-style as Suz describes.

Earrings? I have all kinds of earrings including hoops and I wear them all. I love those Mise en Diors -- gotta find a knockoff!!

MsMary, yes, I was feeling the same about my scarves ... they are just feeling tired. Not sure if it's the scarves, the way I'm wearing them, or just that I've moved on! I will try them tied as suggested and see if that feels a bit fresher.
Glad to hear you are still wearing your hoops! I do love mine and they are a nice change from my usual studs.

I wear hoops more than studs, hate the way infinity scarves look on me, and will most likely not spend any more than necessary to buy a few scarves that I like just because I know how tired I get of prints and want something different.

bettycrocker, I am all about inexpensive scarves ... they are 'change it up' items, not commitment items, and a way for me to get an easy boost of color without a big investment, since i need color fairly infrequently. hooray for another hoops-wearer!

On the scarf front, interestesting weaves and yarns (open weave, chunky weave, variation on cables, etc.) And I'm loving it.

Jewelry: Simple, thin, bangle or band(ring).

After ignoring them for several seasons, my hoops are feeling new again. I wear small thick white gold ones the most.
I've not been wearing indoor scarves much this winter. I accidentally bought an inexpensive infinity scarf to match a beanie, thinking it was long and narrow and not a fan of the style.
I wonder if, with the reappearance of boho, there will be more boho jewelry and scarves in India cotton this summer.

I'm tired of the really long scarves. They always seem to end up drooping on me. I'm hoping for a return of the smaller square scarf. I looked on the Nordstrom scarf pages and was happy to see several of these featured.

I'm getting very tired of the infinity scarf look. I feel like I see way too many women and girls in skinny jeans, booties, a giant lump of infinity scarf on their chest, a massive purse, and booties. Sometimes boyfriend jeans get subbed for the skinnies, and lately I've been seeing more oversized plaid square scarves worn, but overall I've just seen too much of that look.

I kind of like the vertical line that a long scarf can add to an outfit, so I've gone back to that sometimes. I've also been experimenting with different scarf tying methods lately. Also, I just think long scarves are more versatile since it's easy to tie a long scarf into a loop to wear infinity style if desired.

i wear diamond studs or silver hoops and some other earrings. i just wear what earrings i feel like that day! lol
not a fan of infinity scarves - i think my bust area is too large to pull them off correctly. still wearing regular longer scarves.

I think scarves and earring styles can be timeless once you find what works for you and your style.

To me, the dated look comes when people hop on the trend bandwagon with their accessories--the"It" version of a bag, scarf, or shoe that gets hyped on in the fashion media and ends up in a knockoff version on every teenager in the mall.

I was sort of off scarves for awhile but lately I'm loving them again...I don't like the scarf to look too styled so I just sort of wrap it around and tuck the ends in somewhere...I'm still wearing hoops most days...They are accessory workhorses! Not sure if they are dated, but I don't care!

I said I wasn't going to wear my scarves as much this season, but then came the cold, and the snow, and the deep freeze, and then more snow, and then even more snow, and...well guess what I'm wearing? Scarves with everything, indoors and out. I'm seeing all sizes in the stores, with more and more of the square style, and not as many long rectangular ones.

I am not big on jewelry so I usually stick with my stud earrings.
Scarves on the other end are favorites and I usually buy at least one per season. This season I haven't been wearing them so much as a fashion statement but they still are my lazy put together an outfit go to .

I think scarf tying style is very dependent on the outfit, and the shape and style of the person wearing it. Which is kinda what Gaylene said. Well, except the long rectangular ones with a knot in each end, worn under a jacket lapel. THAT is dated

I'm not good with scarves at all, wish I was. Something to work on. But I find sometimes I want bulk at my neck, sometimes I want to create lengthening parallel lines down the front, sometimes I'm just cold.

Struggling a bit with the earring thing since the posts last week... Earrings are a big part of my outfit and look. My face is long, so I like earrings to fill in that spot. Again, I choose them to work with my style, and my outfit, and my face shape. And comfort.... haven't worn studs in years because I find they dig into my head (esp with hats), or they pull and my holes get irritated. So not sure if they are dated.... or frumpy... but they're me!

I wore many scarves over the past few seasons but this year I am also tired of them. I am wearing them for the freezing bitter temps we have been having but that is it. I have kept my indoor ones because I may grow fond of them again.
As for earrings. I am wearing my diamond studs and my silver hoops but I work from home. When I worked in an office I donned many different ones.

The modern classic scarf I seem to be reaching for the most is the plaid one I purchased this season. The second one is an infinity scarf, and I guess I am in the minority in liking them, but I can figure out different ways to wear them. My third favorite new scarf is a blanket scarf in a loose weave. I think it's a bit trendy, as opposed to classic however. My truly classic additions would be solid color cashmere rectangle scarves, fairly thin. They should stand the test of time, and I purchased colors not neutrals. I think the plaid is also a true classic, and may also be a long term find.
