What top for a rust skirt

I have a rust colored pencil skirt that is getting close to its return period and realized I haven't found a top to pair with it.

Thinking of a chunky cream sweater. Have you seen one? Photo is not of the exact skirt, just added to show color.

You know, I remember reading Angie's shopping rule about never buying a skirt unless you also buy tops, or own tops, that you know will work with it, and thinking, "So THAT'S why I never wear my skirts!" I confess that I still break that rule when a pretty skirt tempts me, but now I at least remember to ask myself what might work, so I'll know what to look for next.

Rusts vary--some are more brick red, some more orange, some brownish. You can go for that '70's all-neutral look with dark brown, rust and beige prints, or try black cashmere for drama. A light navy blue can look very pretty with rust. Deep teal/indigo, too. (Complementary colors.) Your chunky cream sweater idea sounds right, especially with suede accessories. Somehow, rust and suede and cable knits just seem to go together!

Angie had an ensemble post a couple of years ago that combined rust, navy and light blue. It was so fresh!

I love rust. There were some chunky turtlenecks on the J. Crew site that I liked. There were some cream ones. I can't do finds from my tablet. Sorry.

Tulle, I know! At least now I return the skirt if I can't find a top. Earlier I would end up keeping it and donating it.

I have a rust-colored skirt that is a workhorse for me. My fave way to wear it is with a black turtleneck and a blue denim jacket. My second fave is with a blue denim shirt and a black velvet riding jacket. (I'm sensing a pattern here -- blue and black with rust.)

You have lots of excellent suggestions. I'd be careful of prints with rust in them...to Garanimal or matronly. How about a striped top in white and black or navy?

I think a chunky cream sweater in a cropped silhouette would work well....or a denim shirt tucked in.

I like joy's idea of a striped top, Breton -ish, slightly boxy and cropped if the skirt is pencil or slim.

I also like rust with grey, perhaps a twin set or neat cardigan, a white t-shirt and a necklace.

(I have got to keep in mind Angie's skirt rule. Your post is a useful reminder.)

My first thought was silvery gray. I think It would also be lovely with a cream blouse, maybe silk? and nude or animal heels. Depending on where you're going, a jean jacket and boots might be great too.

So many great suggestions for your beautiful skirt. I'm excited to see if I can use some of them to get a neglected rust blouse back into play. Thank you!

I don't know why but I am tempted to pair this shade of rust with Blush and Maybe mustard. The blush and mustard may not be conventional, but I think the combination will look fresh.
