What To Wear to a Wedding

Hi Ladies,

I probably should have just shopped my closet in the first place but I was determined I was going to buy something new... Story below for those interested

Wedding is 4.15p.m. followed by evening sit down reception. DH is best man and at this stage it is looking like I am to be seated at the Bridal table (highly unusual but this is turning into an unusual wedding).

This dress is quite a few years old. I have never actually worn it just on it's own. I have worn it in the past over pants:)

I have two different shoes on but have other possibilities too. Also three different jackets should it be cool. It is still brutally hot here and following my wardrobe purge I have three special occasion dresses and they are all black. I am open to accessorizing with colour but Im afraid black it is for the dress. I have two other options but this one is the one I am leaning towards..

I would really appreciate your thoughts. Is this suitable for a wedding? Which topper? Shoe suggestions?

Please note, need to wear shapewear and apologies for the unimpressed look on my face in these photos... it's been a long hot summer and it was really too hot to be trying on clothes this afternoon:)

The Back Story:)

For those interested, I bought a lovely dress, decided it was boring and DH said he didn't love it:) Returned it. Bought another dress which met the desired criteria. Blue, drapey, good coverage and a little fashion forward but requiring a little figure flattery sacrifice. Once I photographed the dress on me I realised I wasn't prepared to sacrifice THAT much figure flattery! So back to the drawing board, hence I am now shopping my closet.

It's a little bit hard to get the finer details on these but I think you can definitely wear it to a wedding. It's looks stunning on its own. The dress is lovely on its own.
I think #3 shorter jacket ( and it looks like little tie at front?) is my pick.
#4 good too
#1 sleeves look great and so does the overall impression. It looks more hip than the others -- so great! As long as the blocks are not too different in texture or shade so that it's obviously a cardigan
Re: shoes: camel = more casual wedding and needs great resin amber coloured ring on hand
black ones: bit more formal - got anything like Angie's green, yellow, black snake skin clutch?

Hi Deborah! Sorry the other dress didn't work out, but I do think the one you already have is great! I don't like to have to buy new items for one-time events, so since you have a nice, formal dress already, I'm more inclined to go with that.

I do like the dress both on it's own and with the jacket in pic 3. My preference is the black shoes, they look a bit dressier to me. Like Allison suggested, a nice, colorful clutch would go great, or maybe some colorful bangles.

I like #3 with black shoes. I know you have tons of beautiful accessories = maybe a little cobalt for extra punch? Have fun at the wedding

Is this an urban wedding or a country affair? In the UK I see more black at weddings if the venue is urban or the couple are from the city. I see less black at country weddings but still think it is an appropriate choice.

First off the dress is stunning on you. I have a strong preference for the clean lines of jacket #4 over the softer dress. I also have a preference for the black shoe. I think a colour, metallic or cream clutch would be a lovely finishing touch which you could possible coordinate with the colour of the corsages for the guests.

I love the dress on you - good call to shop your closet. It's kind of hard to see the toppers but I do like the silhouette in 4, and I'd say go with the black shoes. They look a little dressier than the nude. But as the others have said, a fun bright clutch would be a great addition and make the outfit a bit more festive.

The dress is gorgeous on you and I love it without a jacket in #1. I think I like the jacket in #3 the best but it is so hard to tell with black on black. I also think I like the lighter shoes but it is not a shoe in (haha?). But you really look stunning in #1, that is my main reaction!

The dress is beautiful by itself, but if you need to wear a jacket, I like both #3 and #4. With the black on black, I can't see the jackets clearly in the photos to tell which of those two I like better. It's the sleeves I don't care for in #2.

I think the black shoes look dressier, and a pretty clutch would be the perfect accessory.

With such a pretty dress, you will look stunning!

I love it in #3 but I think I really love it with the camel shoes! (but either works). For me, the camel shoe color really elongated your legs upon my first glance. I can't really see the camel shoe in detail though so maybe it's not as dressy as you want? Either way is great though.

I think this dress is perfect! It flatters your figure tremendously and the lace is right on trend. Sorry it is so hot there right now. I'm sure you're "over it"! All of the toppers look good to me, I'd go with the one that is the most comfortable and makes you feel confident. I think I prefer the nude shoe because I'm rather off square-toed sandals...but that might just be me. I like the way the nude bookends your hair and lengthens your already long legs. A metallic shoe would be nice as well, and you said there were other options. And for the record, a black dress for the minister's wife at a wedding seems appropriate to me, especially since black is your signature.
You really look good here, Deborah! I'm so sorry the other dress didn't flatter.

That is a lovely dress and I think its being lace makes it perfectly wedding appropriate. You look terrific in it without a topper (should it remain hot) or in #4 with the jacket. I like it with both shoes but have a slight preference for the nude for the way they elongate your legs, and I think a light or nude clutch would be a great addition. Sorry the other dress did not work, but this is stunning and lovely!

I'm way too late to vote, but I wanted to tell you that you look lovely and I just hope you had a marvelous time!

I think you've demonstrated the importance of having a "special occasion" capsule at the ready. All your searching for something new gave you opportunity to think about your style direction ---- very worthwhile for the future.

Thanks so much for chiming in lovely ladies. I am very relieved this dress has received YLF approval. I think it' could be almost 10 years old, i cant recall exactly when i bought it. I am favoring the topper in #4 because its a dressier fabric and has the drape and fall that I like. The light shoes are a vintage sandal and the black are old and were my bridesmaids shoes for my friend 7 years ago, so they are dated and I did wonder about the shape. I have my red pumps and a couple of other dressy options. I was considering my black and white polka dot clutch but again I have a nice red clutch too. So it looks like I just need to finalize the "details" and I'm good to go. Oh and it's a city wedding so I know black will be more than acceptable. Thanks again. I'm actually considering a long strand of pearls with the dress but will have a play.. The wedding is this coming Friday in Melboure which is exciting as I get to visit home and see my mum and sister:)

I never would have guessed that the dress is 10 yrs old and that is the mark of a great dress. I love the lace details it's so lady like and appropriate. I hope you had a wonderful time.

I really like the dress! So pretty and I think totally appropriate for a wedding, especially if you add atop of color with shoes/ accessories.

Gorgeous! No need to buy anything Deb when you have something this lovely in your closet. It looks beautiful with the jacket in #3 and #4 and is totally appropriate for the occasion. I like Angie's suggestion of non black shoes and a colourful clutch. What do you have in that area?

I think you look great in the dress. Think I.like jacket in3 best. Adding color is good but nonetheless of adding white or pales -- such as your pearls or dot.purse- more than jewel tones, but I don't know the seasons there.

Thanks Ladies. Im actually starting to get excited about the wedding now I know what I am wearing.

Shannon as far as a clutch goes, I have red, black, b&w polka dot. I am keen to add colour but I am veering towards black and white, or black and silver. I have a gorgeous little black satin evening bag that is calling out to go out with the dress:) Having said that I am going to try it on with my red pumps and clutch too.

Unfrumped it is officially Autumn here but in reality it is still summer.. but I have checked the forecast and we are looking at 24 degrees celcius on Friday (yay) which thrills me because I feel more comfortable in a jacket.

This dress is fab on you. I like the jacketc in #3 and 4 the best, but it's hard to see the fabric and details. You look beautiful!
