What to wear to a "tamelada"?

DH and I have been invited to a "tamelada" or tamale-making party, the day after Christmas. I understand it's a big fun messy event where all generations gather to "gossip and make tamales " to quote my dear old friend and work colleague who is hosting. He grew up in Mexico and his wife is from South Texas and when they make traditional food from those regions it's always a real treat.

Other than wearing clothes suitable for messy cooking fun, are there any sartorial traditions for this event?

I'd get a fantastic and festive apron and wear a comfy column of colour underneath.

Suz....hmmm...a new apron...there's an idea....I have some old boring ones but never wear them....hmm...hello Amazon...:-)

I could ask my friend but he cares not a whit about fashion and I'd like to surprise him with whatever I wear.

same here... no idea about what to wear, but very jealous as this sounds amazing. I will be curious to know if making tamales is hard...

This is probably the perfect apron. My son bought it for me in Buenos Aires.

Tamale making parties are common around here at this time of year. There's no special dress code - they're generally pretty casual affairs. My parents have friends that host one every year.

As Sara said, theose events are very casual, so wear something comfortable that you are not afraid if it gets dirty with "masa" or filling. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as well.

K.M. - Tamales aren't hard to make but it's time consuming. That's why tamale parties are popular - the more people involved, the faster it goes.

This sounds like fun! I like the idea of a cute apron. Anthropologie often has cute aprons.

You could go to Walmart and get a reindeer antler (or something similar and festive) head band to keep your hair back out of your face, a good idea around food.
I second La Pedestrienne about sleeves. If it is a warm kitchen, you may want short sleeves.

Hmm...cowboy boots....I am now regretting that I did not buy the gorgeous ostrich leather ones I saw on one of my first ever business trips years ago which happened to be to Houston. They were $300 then and I wouldn't even venture to guess what they would cost now.

I do have some cognac lucky ones that are vaguely western, although I could never compete with real cowboy boots, especially my friend (the host's) collection.

I am going to look for aprons, great suggestion.

Ooh! I just remembered that DH inherited his Dad's bolo tie collection. DH's dad was the child of Dutch immigrants to Toronto and the family moved to Boston when he was a very young child. He retired to Sedona Arizona and although he was totally uninterested in fashion he collected turquoise/silver bolo ties when he lived there. We are always looking for excuses to wear them.

Thinking jeans, denim shirt with sleeves rolled, bolo tie, cognac boots, and a fun apron. Will have to get an apron for DH too unless he wants to wear the black google-logo one he got somewhere.
