What to wear on a UK trip? - YouLookFab Forum

Hi,
I'm going to UK on my first abroad trip in May mid.I would really like some advice as to what should I wear on my day trips and also at night for a dinner with friends.
I don't want to wear jeans but also nothing over the top.I was thinking of some cute dresses like this.

I would also like to wear some cold-shoulder tops and summer skirts like this.

Let me know if this is good.Any suggestion is appreciated.Also please suggest,what kind of weather I should expect and if these clothes are good for mid May.

Thank you so much for your amazing comments.All of you have suggested to take layered clothings.Thank you so much.I'll do the same.I was so wrong about the UK weather.I would rather be comfortable and see more places in this short trip,than to feel cold and uncomfortable and be confined to hotel room or worse be a nuisance to other trip members.
I'm still learning how to add the pics.But don't you worry, I'll learn it soon,before my next post.I may end up posting another post for your suggestions,after modifying the clothes selection.

Edit2:- For those who had asked.It's a very short 10-15 days of trip,in which weekdays will be spent in office and mostly nights having dinner out with colleagues.We are planning to squeeze in a 2/3 days of Scotland trip in that time.And we will be at the Paddington.So will be doing some local site seeing there.

Hi! What are your destinations and activities aside from going out?

I'm afraid these clothes will be too cold unless you plan to layer over and under them - the UK in May can be quite cool. I wouldn't be looking at summer clothes at all, frankly, though be flexible and check again right before you go. Also, the UK tends to be wet a lot of the time, though I don't know about May specifically.

Hi there, I would suggest clothing layers, comfy shoes for walking (ideally waterproof), a rain coat of some description, and a dark, neutral or understated palette - this is based on a recent trip to London with a similar itinerary (touring around in the day, casual dinners in the evening).

I agree with Christina - definitely think mild spring rather than warm summer weather.

Hi there,love your dresses but they would only be good for evenings indoors.The weather in the UK can be extremely fickle especially in May,it could be hot or wet and cold or usually both on the same day!lt also depends which part of the uk that you plan to visit,south is warmer than North,west is wetter than east.I would echo what the girls have said above,light layers ,comfy shoes and definitely a lightweight waterproof,a bag that will hold your layers as you take them on and off would also be a good idea.

I do think flat shoes (white sneakers) and take a jacket ie denim jacket or bomber.

I would throw in some pants too - jeans, some crops or whatever you like.

I love your choices but the weather is super changeable there so be prepared for it all:)

I made a note to myself to get comfortable platform flats for any trip to British cities to try to keep feet above the puddles and wet cobblestones.

Count on having damp weather, and consider it a blessing if it is sunny. I always take a cashmere pullover and usually wear it all the time for the warmth. A puffer jacket that can fit under your trench coat is worth it's weight in gold. I rarely wore the skirt I usually bring, but wear long pants for warmth and because they usually work with my waterproof flat booties. For me ballet flats are just too cold.

If you tell us a bit more about what you're planning to do during the day, you can get better advice. I agree with suggestions above to add some layers so your clothing will flex through a wide range of temps, with fairly cool and wet being most expected. Would you be OK wearing them with tights and boots, and a sweater on top? For the first one, you could do a white ls tee underneath, white tights, and a jeans jacket. I'd like to see the second one styled to be "tough" with moto boots and black leggings, with lots of shiny necklaces on top. Of course that's my taste--what's yours?

I spent 5 weeks in the UK last October and saw lots of cropped/ankle length pants and lovely tailored coats and jackets. Flat but fashionable and walkable shoes. I think a Spring version of this would be great. Plan on walking a lot so make sure your shoes are up to it. Can’t report on dressy restaurants since we ate mostly in pubs (which were mostly great and fun btw). A packable raincoat would be good too. Have a wonderful time!

It sounds like a lovely trip. My dear dad always said ‘cast not a clout until May be out’. It can be chilly in the morning and evening. Definitely bring a little umbrella. Trainers are worn a lot, with skirts and black opaque tights as well as sheers and with trousers.

So, it may seem quite odd (did to me anyway!) I would wear very comfortably now smart black trainers with the black lace skirt you have a link too and a nipped in jacket to a smart restaurant. I love the Bardot neck dress - again perfect. Layer up though because that might be chilly - a coatigan might be good. Have a super trip.

I was in the UK last year in April and into early May. I'm from Australia, so I may feel the cold more than some, but I found it still pretty chilly. It was still snowing in Edinburgh, for instance! And Belfast was still very cold, though London was milder.
I had to pack for both some work and some play.
For play, I wore jeans, boots, thermal top for days outside, light jumper and a coat. It can be quite warm inside. I took a wool coat and a rain coat, but had to buy a puffer for Edinburgh. The locals were still wearing very heavy coats and scarves there (sleet, snow!). Looking back at my photos of Scotland and even England, I'm seeing beanies and scarves, going to Loch Ness, in particular was very cold.
For work I took skirts, boots, opaque tights and light jumpers, and I was comfortable with my coat.
You may be going a couple of weeks later than me, but still, I'd pack a mix of things, and certainly take some warmer items that you can layer up.

Hi Mimi, I think what you want to wear depends upon your normal temperature. Coming from Australia, when I went to London in June, I was wearing my Australian winter clothing and was shocked at how much I wore my Burberry trench, when it was a last minute addition to my suitcase. So whilst I love the items that you have picked, I would be also adding in some sweaters and a coat.

We have family in Scotland so we are there fairly often...usually April or May and I second the idea of plenty of layers for choice, a good packable raincoat and good walking shoes. The weather is so changeable. We will be there in June this year for a graduation (and garden party!) at St. Andrews U. and I am still planning on layers and perhaps rain. Expect the unexpected for sure. Hope you are surprised with lovely warm sunny days!

I was in England and Scotland two years ago the last week in April and two weeks in May. It rained a lot in England and was cool for me, daytimes highs of 60-70F. Layers were perfect for the changeable temperatures. It was a beautiful time to visit!
