What to wear for "casual/sporty" vacation?

We are taking a 2-week road trip at the end of March/beginning of April through Arizona, San Diego, and northern California. I don't want to look frumpy, but need to be comfortable. I think the weather could go either way at that time of year, so I'm sure layers are a good idea, but I'd appreciate any other suggestions! (I included "sporty" since we will be going to several baseball games in AZ.)

I'd suggest jeans, clamdiggers or bermuda shorts, lightweight tops andcardigan sweaters/light jackets for layering.
Depending on how close to the coast you will be, the weather should be pretty nice by then.

Good shoes! Probably something in the sportier category, like Tevas or Privos? REI type gear will fit right in and be functional. A dark pair of skinny or straight leg jeans (with some stretch) can sit in the car for hours and still look good. Jersey shirts or cardigans don't wrinkle much so they might be useful too.

Hey sis!

I'd definitely pack some jeans for evenings (maybe white?)
Clams or burmudas (Angie posted some KUT ones in the YLF store recently)
Casual comfy tops (JCrew has some cute tanks and graphic tees)
A cropped jacket
One or two sundresses
One or two pair of sandals
One or two cardigans in fun colors
Tanks (I love the nautical striped ones that Gap has now)

Julieann- I grew up in SoCal (the LA area) and currently live in the Bay Area. I know it will probably be warmer in Arizona, but I for one am never in shorts yet in late March or early April. I'd plan for nice spring weather, but don't count on it being summer yet. Where exactly in Northern Ca will you be? It does make a difference...

3 years ago, I went to spring training in Arizona (hubby is a Cubs fan) and then we continued on in a similar road trip. (Acutally we were on the road for 8 weeks and traveled the perimeter of the U.S.) I'm with Queenie, plan for pretty spring weather. Does your body run warm? Otherwise, I wouldn't count on the shorts. This was pre-YLF so I lived in jeans and long sleeves (I run cold) while we were in the states that you plan on visiting. Definitely needed a jacket for morning and evenings.

Thank you all for the ideas! Wow Sarah, I was looking at getting a straw bag JUST like that. You'd think we were sisters.

I have seen some great knit tops already that would be comfy and fun - I like the idea of a jacket for layering, because yes I am always cold!! I didn't want to be stuck in hoodies so that is a perfect solution.

Try a cropped denim jacket or some cropped cardigans.
And don't forget a few fun accessories to keep things interesting. Scarves would be fun too, just the light ones for layering.
Phoenix will be hot, but I bet CA will be cool enough for layers.
I wish I lived up there so we could go shopping. But it is fun having my sister on YLF.
If you get your things early enough, post photos so we can see what you came up with!

Everyone has great ideas! I just wanted to add (as someone who has driven from one end of the country to the other and back again...with 5 kids no less) that the weather varies a lot between Arizona, SoCA, and NoCA ( I was freezing in NoCA at the end of summer after sweating in SoCA...late August) so make sure you have that good cropped jacket and cardigans that Sarah mentioned. Especially in the mornings, it can be quite cold in places. Also, think about fabrics that won't wrinkle too easily since you'll be in the car as good bit.

I am a little late to the party, sorry !!

My family takes a 16 day vacation every year to see family under the same geographical situations that you describe : we hike, we canoe, we go into city, etc.

I bought this coat last year , in black, it is completely waterproof but looks like a spring coat:

It is a super lightweight coat that is great in your back pack if your are doing something sporty - but it looks fantastic in the city because the silhouette is that of a trench. It is also super for layering since it has no lining and it is a great windbreaker to boot.

It is mega comfortable and looks great with casual skirts, shorts or dresses.

This is a great lightweight skirt that has a pair of shorts underneath - you can ride a in bike them !

As always, bring a scarf and a pair of tights ( footless or not ) to layer.

Hi Julieanne,

My son wanted the computer so I didn't get to finish.

The thing I really like about the "sporty" clothes from Athleta is that they are super easy care, most don't wrinkle easily, and they dry quickly ! They are not "precious" clothes that you have to worry about wearing.

You might want to look at their dresses too.
