What to wear to a very fancy restaurant?

My old college friend is going to be in the area for an mountaineering course. In exchange for him crashing at my place he's going to take me to probably the fanciest restaurant in town for dinner. They have a dress code even.

He's been living in France for seven years, so he can handle the dress code. Blazer, slacks etc.
For me I know a dress. But can it skew more cocktail, or should I go conservative like a sheath?

I looked at the site's video. It looks like it a combo of conservative and cocktail. What would feel best to you? I'd probably go cocktail-ish but not over the top dressy. That's just me...have a great time!!

Last time I was there I wore an asymmetrical Isabel Marent dress and i felt fine. There were conservativelt dressed women, but I remember seeing a woman with a giant bejeweled artistic necklace that definitely wasn't conservative.

Another vote for a cocktail dress, that has a bit of edge to it. Can't wait to see what you end up wearing!

I'd say wear whatever dressy outfit makes you feel the most awesome. Maybe something you don't otherwise often have the chance to wear?

"Cocktail" is a slippery adjective. There are cocktail dresses and there are cocktail dresses. Maybe "elegant" or "sophisticated" might be better guidelines when choosing a dress?

It reminds me of the time when a career adviser told a group of mostly 18-20 year-old female students to "dress up" for their on-campus company interviews. A few showed up in the traditional suits, but a good half of the them showed up in either eye-popping club wear or taffeta/chiffon bridesmaid dresses. Lesson learned...

Gosh, it's been ages since if been to a restaurant with a dress code. It looks lovely. I'm thinking that most of your opera capsule would be appropriate.

Haha Gaylene! "Dress up" definitely has different meanings to different people.
That restaurant looks awesome -- you'll have to do a food/drink report Anna!
Meanwhile, I think elegant cocktail dress would work.

Oh wow! I vote for fun cocktail too. Seems like the type of place where you get all types of "dressed up" from people coming from work in suits or even biz casual to people in evening dress. So I say have fun with it!

I agree with Gaylene. Cocktail reads more party to me where elegant & sophisticated sound more fitting for a fancy dinner.

I have a navy silk dress with giant brass grommets from Haute Hippie. It has short sleeves and is a straight sack style.

I love the sound of the navy dress. Sounds elegant and interesting.

maybe I'm old fashioned, but to me this is where the LBD comes in handy. always when in doubt about how dressy to be, a LBD dressed up a bit works. For most of us older ladies it is a wardrobe necessity.

I love the idea of that navy dress...I know exactly the one you mean. that would be a perfect balance between cocktail and conservative. I can't help but think of that lace black dress that Julia Roberts wears to dinner in Pretty Woman. LOL.

I like the Navy dress idea. Isn't the black a little heavier? If it's any time soon you'll want something cooler, I'd imagine. I like the idea of the navy dress because it's a little more stylish/interesting but still elegant. I wouldn't go too conservative...it's not a funeral or a professional event! You're there to have fun and enjoy yourself!

I had a look at the gallery and video. Seems most are dressed business-like. I didn't see jewels and fur... um, not that fur would be advisable.

I like the idea of a navy silk, something silky. But I'd also personally love the opportunity to wear my shiny cocktail dress - I'd perhaps do it despite the discreet atmosphere.

I went briefly to the site but never got to images of people ..... First the architecture of the building stopped me in my tracks, and then I couldn't get beyond the food gallery. Which was like porn. omg. In this environment fashion would be the last thing on my mind, hahaha!
