Here is roughly what I wrote a few days ago on the similar thread in Off topic:
It's a commitment. That was the main thing for me.
I had (still have?) a private blog through which I kept my close friends and family updated about our family news. It was a shortcut to emailing everyone individually and endless agreeing on the best time to Skype.
I was fun. I was writing a lot, it was my creative outlet (much needed and the only other me-thing I had in addition to YLF), I was keeping track of the fun things we did, all my photos were sorted, edited, etc. But it takes time, a lot of it.
As my blog was sort of timeline, I also found that once I'd fall of the track, it was impossible to catch up. Better just say "back after unplanned absence" and start from where, than to back-feed all the missing content.
But, I miss my blog and I plan to reactivate it, perhaps not the same one but something that would be my space. Which is why I'm thinking of concept. I think it's important to know what your blog is about - style, lifestyle, travel log, anything else defined... there should be a common theme, rather than mish-mash of things, at least I think. May sound contradictory that by identifying the need for a creative outlet I also advocate certain discipline in what to post, but I personally know those are the blogs I personally like to follow to most. I can actually dive in them, if it makes any sense.
Of course, the question is who would your blog be for, who'd read it? Private audience or anyone? That drives a lot of things too.
