What to do With a Denim Shirt?

I finally found a denim shirt at a thrift store this week, now I am at a loss of what to do with it. Originally, I had planned on wearing it over a cream sweater that I have, and with pearls. I ordered a vintage pearl necklace expressly for this purpose, so we'll see if that works when it gets here. In the meantime, I am having a tough time coming up with other ideas. Angie's blog was about wearing it with a pencil skirt, lacy cami and obi belt. That's not what I'm after, I need more casual stylings. Mine is a men's rather boxy cut and very faded. I tried it out yesterday with my skinny cords and belted over some tops as a jacket. It didn't work very well. I was thinking maybe under my boyfriend sweater with black skinny pants and boots. I am amazed at your layering skills! I'd never have thought to layer three shirts together like that. Two suggestions:

1) Roll the sleeves up higher. Something about the length is making your arms look proportionately too short? Try rolling above the elbow?

2) Maybe a wider belt? Worn a few inches higher?

I have my eye on the denim shirt at BR. Maybe I'll sneak out today and go try it on... it's very slow at work. My idea was to wear it with my black ponte knit pants, unbelted. Maybe not so original but I used to wear a similar outfit when my kids were babies (oversized denim shirt with stirrup pants and ballet flats), and I am finding myself nostalgic.

I will be watching this thread for other ideas...

I thought the same as Shiny, try hitching the belt up by a couple of inches or wearing a wider belt. That is the type of shirt I tried (unsuccessfully) to thrift.

This is one of my favourite ways to wear mine, please excuse the slippers

I like it with the black R&J. Maybe I am overthinking it.
I am going to try rolling the sleeves up more and experimenting with other belts and without. (Or as my husband says "playing dress up")
I'll try to post more pictures.

I think I'd like it even longer on you, like Angie's bat wing shirt in today's blog. It will be too cold for now, but how about over a tank or cami?

Can you find one that is more fitted in the shoulders? Would that help?

Ooooh... I like the second outfit even better! You are clever. You make me want to run right out and snap up a denim shirt of my own... I could do this same idea with my long gray cardigan...

I think this one totally works, and I give it a 10!

Love the 2nd pic as well! LOL - my first instinct is to do it with black ponte knit pants as well because I wore with black stirrup pants back in the day with mine! Too Funny!

On the denim shirt - I like mine to hit just at or below the hips & be a little fitted. Then, I will pair it with my ponte knit pants & my scrunchy suede boots & a fab patterened scarf (could add a vest on that outfit as well). Or, surrender your waist again but do it with a fitted black skirt & tights. It's also fun peeking out from a heavyweight wool sweater - I especially love to pair it with a camel colored one I have. I'm a big denim fan so have always had one hanging in my closet. The fit just seems to change a little over the years.

Outfit #2 totally works! I think it’s essential to wear a denim shirt like that with black. It gives it the necessary sophistication.

Yes, outfit #2 looks modern and fresh! I think that denim shirt works better as an inner layer like you have for #2.

I like the 2nd outfit overall, but I think your denim shirt is a bit too big, specially when you are wearing oversized vest with it. Something is not working for me anyway, sorry, but that's what I think!

I like that last outfit too - I think it just needs a little pop of color. Maybe a scarf or necklace? Or layer a colorful tank or cami under the shirt?
