What should I do with my hair?

I've got a hair appointment tomorrow; I haven't gotten my hair cut since sometime last fall. Right now it's a bit below the shoulder, with grown-out layers and no bangs. It's wavy and will go either more curly or straight depending on how I dry/style it. It's pretty thick - not the individual strands but the volume of it. The last couple years I was getting highlights from a salon as well as coloring, so it went a lighter brown than my natural color (which is graying as well). The last couple months I've done a root touchup and then an overall dye just to blend the highlights in with the new growth a little, but it's kind of mousy at the moment. The appointment is just for a cut/style but I definitely want to do some sort of color at some point (it's a new to me salon so I'm taking it one step at a time).

Would you be open to long sweeping bangs? I think they'd look lovely on you. I like layers in your hair as well.

Also check out Trekkiegirl (sp) recent posts, she just cut some bangs and layers, could be an inspiration for you too.

I love this length on you. I think some layers to frame your face would be nice although I don't know how that works with wavy/curly hair.

When I've had bangs in the past - granted, it was probably 15 years ago now - they tended to get very cowlick-y if I didn't straighten them just right. But that was before they'd invented flat irons, or at least before I owned one...

You have pretty hair and it sounds versatile too. Do you like to wear it up? If not I would go shorter, more into a long bob length I think. If you tie it back, I would just get a few layers cut in.

I hear you on bangs. I struggle with them too. I like the face framing effect but hate the extra effort involved. When I get them, I never do anything short, or even eyebrow grazing. I have naturally wavy hair with the McDonalds arches (aka cowlicks) in front (thanks Mom for that nickname) so if I do bangs I do long sideswept ones that I can either pull back with the rest of my hair or leave them loose but again they are loooong in terms of bangs.

Anyway, I hope you get your hair sorted out. I know for me if I have "good hair" the rest of my style/dressing tends to go more smoothly and overall I feel more confident and pulled together.

Instead of bangs (which can be high maintenance) maybe just get some layering to accentuate your waves/curls into a slightly angled bob? A few highlights could be something fun to add as well.

I was thinking along the same lines as Texstyle, I think some face framing layers with no bangs would be great and a bit off the back length, or try the bob idea? I'm a similar hair type with fine-ish hair but lots of it. Mine waves a little, but not quite as curly as you. I personally like the option of being able to tie my hair up so I always make sure I'm left with enough length to do that. Perhaps something for you to consider if you want to do the same.

I'd suggest losing some of the length, taking it to about collar length, and having some layers cut in. As for colour, I really like the colour in picture 4. The lighter shade really suits you.

#3/4 reminded me of tea leoni. Check out her styles that are pretty similar in length to what you already have going but with more layers and maybe a little shorter. And I like the honey highlights over medium brown in #4.

If you can think of some styles that you like, you can google it, like 'pixie crop hairstyles' or 'long wavy hair' and get lots of inspiration with the images that appear. I think that lots of styles would suit your face shape, so much will depend on how much time you want to spend on it. I don't own a hairdryer and do nothing more than comb my hair so I tell my hairdresser to work with what's there and she does!

Thanks, everyone, for your ideas. I may go safe and get a trim with some long layers, especially since it's a new hairdresser for me. I definitely want to keep it long enough to pull into a ponytail for working out, etc. I liked the highlights when they were new, but they took a lot of time and money to keep up, and they kinda fried my hair over time.
