What should I buy in Japan?

We are leaving on our Big Trip in the morning, and generally it will be an "experience" trip rather than a shopping trip. But... I anticipate having maybe a half-day in Hiroshima, Japan to do a little shopping. I have already told Mr. K that I would love to buy One Fab Thing while we are there. The perfect bag, or jacket, or pair of shoes or what-have-you.

Any suggestions? Anybody familiar with Hiroshima and have any shopping pointers? We are staying at the Sheraton next to the main train station.

My vote is always for scarves, simply because they are easy to pack for the return trip home.

MK, I wasn't joking - the toys in Japan are drop-dead amazing. The coolest stuff doesn't make it to the states. Do yourself a favor and at least visit one toy store. So fun!

IK, thanks! I hadn't really thought of that, and my two guys (Mr. K and the Marine) will definitely enjoy it, too!! They are both gigantic toys/comic books/video games nerds!!

Atlantia, yes, I am planning to pick up scarves at every port! I am hoping, though, to find something perhaps a bit more substantial on the last stop in Japan!

MK, my last time in Japan the exchange rate was deadly. I'm not sure what it is like now. However, much of what you can find there, you can find in the states - and in your size, which can be tough in Japan. I am pretty middlin-sized for Americans and could barely squeeze into a man's size in Japan! Since Angie was there recently she can probably guide you better, though, she seems to have found treasure troves.

My vote is for a piece of artwork, and perhaps some pottery if you can safely carry it. YAY!!!

nipless. shisheido, not the make up, the creams and potions.

visit takashimaya food halls and the kimono floor--everything here was out of our price range but we picked up an obi and lacquerware in kyoto. sorry, angie, taka is tops in my book.

agree with ik, toys and possibly electronics if it converts to us voltage.

Textiles for your home - I used my 20 year old japanese block-print linens for brunch this morning. Still beautiful.

I love electronic assessories - iPhone cases, camera straps, all sorts of wonderful things! And organizers for your life; they have organizers for everything!

I like Japanese marshmellows.

ETA: They also have good deals on -crossbody- purses. People generally there are short and they can't buy the crossbody styles as readily; so I get them for a song.

Check out the different flavors of KitKats. They might be fun to bring back.
A fabulous hand made Japanese chef's knife if you like to cook or want to look like you do.
Ditto the scarves.
Crazy socks. DS brought me some With a colorful Our Lady of Guadalupe on top of the foot.

Shibori scarf (or other textile).

Japanese sweets are awesome and some of them are *very* local - the town or temple is given a monopoly on production. My favorite is fresh Yatsuhashi, which you will only find in Kyoto.

Miyajima island is *really* pretty. It was my favorite part of visiting Hiroshima.

DENIM. Japanese denim is highly renowned, and their denim trends don't always follow those of the US. When I was there, it was fascinating to see all the different styles.

Of course, I will never, ever forgive myself for not bringing home something from the Namennayo store.
