What shoes to wear with skirts and tights?

Hi all...sorry I've been a bit absent on the board lately. I've got some family health issues to deal with at the moment. I try to escape (for my own sanity) and get on the computer every once and a while, but time just slips away it seems. Anyway, hopefully all will be resolved soon. Sorry, that's probably from the more than you need to know department, but it felt good to get it off my chest for the moment

Anyway....on to the question. What other shoes (besides boots) are acceptable to wear with skirts and tights? We have fairly mild winters and I was wondering if flats were an acceptable alternative as I don't always feel like wearing my boots. Would pumps be better? I have a very casual lifestyle so I actually don't own any pumps. I would welcome links to examples of shoe styles that would work with this outfit. Thanks so much for your help!!

I think that quite a few pump - like shoes could work with skirts and tights. Since you are on your feet a lot, how about some with low wedge heel like this:

Hi Dani -- I was just thinking yesterday that we hadn't heard from you in a while. I am sorry to hear that you are having a difficult family situation and I hope everything gets better soon.

As for shoes, I like the idea of a low-heeled pump. Also, what about flat oxfords? Angie blogged about them a couple of months ago and I know Patience has worn hers with a skirt and tights.

I usually wear my skirts & tights with a ballet flat. It's definitely a casual look, and might not be totally fab, but it's what I do.

I also like the look of a boot with skirts & tights.

So sorry to hear this, Dani. I hope things will lighten up for you and your family.

I recommend low-heeled pumps rather than flats with tights. You could look for something with a 1 inch heel; there are many comfortable options out there. It will look sleeker than flats. I also like Tanya's idea of wedges. Oh, just last nite I was browsing DSW (as someone recommended their Me Too sale) and saw these, which I bet are comfortable and they should look good with skirts and tights (they have a 2 inch heel, though):

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time!

I have worn tights, skirts and ballet flats before. In general, my tips would be:

- Keep the color of the tights and the flats the same, to create a long lean line.

- Make sure the tights fit well, and don't bag, sag or become too dark around the ankles. This happens more easily with flats than pumps, unfortunately!

- I find that flats look best with shorter skirts. No longer than at the knee, preferably a bit higher. In fact, I'm most likely to wear ballet flats and tights with mini-skirts! And this principle works in reverse, the longer the skirt, the higher the heel I need to get the correct proportions. YMMV, depending on the proportions of your legs.

- the flats should have the lowest vamp possible

I love wearing skirts, tights, and shoes. I typically do a dressier patent shoe (because it's what I currently have) but I recently saw these at TJMaxx (for half this price)

and thought they'd be super cute with tights. My mom actually has a pair and wears them with and without tights with her skirts/dresses.
More comfort/day wear brands are designing cuter shoes. Hopefully you'll be able to find something that works for you!

Dani, our thoughts are with you. Vent any time.
I had black tights on when I tried some Me Too wedges similar to the ones Sara posted, only no decoration on the strap. They looked good, but I think a stocking that is semi opaque rather than completely opaque would look better with shoes and skirts.
FYI, the second pair of Me Too shoes Inge posted were either 40 or 50% off that price in the store. Of course, finding your size then becomes a matter of luck.

Hi Dani!

We are like those female friend groups you see in the movies that have known each other since kindergarden. (that never really exist because it takes more than kindergarden to have a large group of women connect.) Don't feel like you can't share your burden with us. I did it when my dad was having a hard time over the summer and it made my burden a lot less to carry.

Anyway, I love everyone's suggestions, especially the low wedge heel ones. For the most part, I see wedges a bit more casual than a heeled pump--and they are certainly more comfortable and easier to walk in. Shoe shopping can be good therapy too. Take care and I hope you're back here in no time!
