What separates Movado from other watches?

Years ago, when I went watch shopping at Coach, the salesperson told me that the mechanism of the watch that I was examining was made by Movado. I hadn't heard of them at the time, but I'm wondering what separates a Movado watch from, say, a Coach watch or a Citizen watch. Aren't all the mechanisms the same?

I don't know how each of the watches is made. Movado does have a distinctive style. I have had good luck with both Movado and Citizen, though I don't know it that helps with your question. Someone here will know though. I would imagine that when Furla or Coach (or any other company that is not primarily focused on time keeping), does watches, they may be likely to use other companies' mechanisms.

Oh, Movado is famous for its Museum Watch design and Swiss watch-engineering heritage. But now, it wasn't Movado that made it into the book, Quintessence

Swiss mechanisms are considered the best.
Japanese next.
Shinola is doing an interesting thing in Detroit with Swiss training & techniques, but made in Detroit. I've been very happy my Shinola. Salesperson at Nordstrom said it was better than a Burberry which has a Swiss mechanism.
My Dad had a watch he bought in Europe that turned out to have a French mechanism. A woman who replaced the battery she said it was very good quality.
I have a Movado that I like a lot. Just need to replace the battery. Same woman who worked on my Dad's watch, said my watch was good because she had the same one.
Personally I find Chinese mechanisms crap. I was very disappointed in a Michele watch from Nordstrom, especially given the price.

My 20 year old movado just recently gave out. Watch guy said it was fixable but I haven't done it yet or gotten a quote because I actually have a second movado that is very similar but a nicer model (both are museum watches). I wear it the most out of all my watches.

I agree with anna, Swiss and Japanese movements are best.

I'm guessing that the salesperson was trying to convey to you that the watch has a "quality" movement, instead of cheaper, mass-produced, no-name parts. Movado is a well-known name, though I've always thought their big selling point was their design look, i.e exterior appearance, supplemented by Swiss mechanics (like Rachylou said).

I have a movado which is lovely but gets little love in terms of wear because like Anna's it needs a new battery. For the past year I have been wearing an Eco Citizen watch which I love - mostly because it never ever needs a new battery. I have several beautiful watches but they always seem to be out of battery life.

I lovd my 2 Citizen Eco watches. I've had them for several years and they're going strong. I hate having to change batteries. Why suffer if I don't have to?
