What prevalent trends are you sitting out?

It seems like everywhere I go, destructed denim is the rage. I was just on Nordie's website earlier today, looking at shorts, and they must have had thirty different types of destructed blue denim shorts! I like the look of destructed denim on others, but it is so not my style—too grungy.

I also don't do Birkenstocks. They bring back very bad memories of college frump. I had a friend who was concerned that he would end up as a middle-aged lab tech wearing Birks with socks to work. That has stuck with me.

And I don't do exposed bra straps, even the pretty ones. Those are all over the place.

What trends are you sitting out that you see everywhere?

Definitely the casual things ... the only trend I love is the midi length and the fit and flare ... I can't do the Birks or the frayed denim ... and sporty luxe makes me want to rip my hair out (for myself; looks good on others)

I hear you on sporty luxe. Not my cup of tea either. But others look really good in it.

I hear ya! I can't do Birkenstocks again. I wore them the first go around and they were comfortable, but yes they bring back memories....so can't go down that fashion nightmare again.
I realize that I have grown to like a more stylish, classy fashion . So that is good that my fashion taste has changed.
Funny to see the "trends" cycle through ie: Birks, neon, etc.

I'm giving a miss to (after trying several on and deciding that the whole look, not just the particular item, wasn't for me):

-white pants
-peeptoe and/or peep heel booties
-loafers/moccasins/smoking shoes

on the other hand I'm wholeheartedly embracing or wish to embrace more:

-moto and bomber style jackets
-rolled or cropped pants
-midi full and tube skirts
-gladiator sandals
-booties
-floral
-tunic and oversized tops
-pointy d'orsay flats and low heels and ankle straps
-fashion sneakers

most other trends I'm neutral on

I would consider Birks or a similar sandal if they fell in my lap, but they're not so appealing to me that I've sought them out. I wore them last time around in the 90s, so I can take them or leave them.

Sporty luxe is sooooo not my style. In fact, it might be the opposite of my style (does that mean my style is recumbent ordinary?).

Birks because my low volume feet are not made for it.

Distressed denim (as in torn to bits!) Because I am not that RATE.

Super cropped tops because I don't have the midriff for it.

On the other hand I am loving the sporty trend! So much fun!

MJ, it is fun to see trends cycling through again! And it's interesting how we react to them now based on how we viewed them in the past.

Rabbit, good for you for trying so many trends. White pants are strange IMO—I can do white jeans, but I'm not sure I want to do white pants. I'm not sure why. I don't do the peeptoes either.

Laura, sporty luxe is also the opposite of my style. It is one of my "anti" style descriptors. I guess I am recumbent ordinary also. Angie needs to add that to her list of style descriptors.

Another one sitting out Peeptoe booties...
And deconstructed denim..I am happy to wear denim with holes but I want them to be holes that I have created through wearing and loving the denim.
There are also lots of trends that I do like but have not gone there yet due to finances, lifestyle,bodyshape. These include pointed toe flats, moto jackets, ankle strap shoes.....

I'd like to replace worn out pumps and flats with pointy toe versions; otherwise all other shoe trends are probably going to pass me by. I need basic trousers desperately so probably wouldn't spend on say harem or sporty luxe pants either. I have zero jeans so probably wouldn't go overly trendy with those either. It's ok though. If pointy toes are the only trend I can do this year I'm fine with that and will have fun!

Let me count the trends...

There are lots I'm not doing, but off the top of my head: white pants or jeans (or much white anything), blush, pastels, sporty luxe, florals.

Boyfriend jeans, distressed denim, harem or crossover or track pants, cropped pants, jumpsuits, overalls, striped skirts.

Dressy flats of any kind including smoking-shoe-y loafers, ankle strap shoes that are "hey, ankle strap!!" (I have some that technically have ankle straps but the whole shoe is strappy [but not dainty], so it's not just one for the sake of it), very sneakery sneakers, peep toes (I often find then painful, and my toes are too short for them anyway).

I hardly ever buy handbags, so by definition I'm not following those either.

I am doing Birkis though. Never had them before and got them in a non-hippie color.

Fun question. I really am a fashion naysayer a lot of the time, LOL. But I swear, I really do have fun with fashion!

Gigi - I guess I'm sitting out a lot of trends, not that I don't like them, but because I don't "need" them. I'm really trying to buy things for my real life with longevity.

So I'm sitting out:
1. Birkies - not comfortable and I don't wear sandals (cold feet) but I like them
2. Harem Pants - I love them and think they are neat but I would not wear them enough and would not wear them to work.
3. Bombers - again love them but don't need another jacket and if I did it would be a blazer. But they look so great on everyone!!
4. White jeans etc - love the look but with muddy doggy paws and being a dirt magnet would not work for me.
5. sweatpants jeans - swwon worthy but pricey and I'd rather have something dressier - but I love them
6. distressed jeans - love the look but I have a more polished aesthetic.
7. pastels/color - still happy black/gray with some white and cream thrown in, but adore seeing it on everyone else!!

I could go on but you get the picture. I actually like most things when done well by someone else. But there is only so much time and so much cash. So I've been trying to stick with "my" look. It's hard because there is so much temptation seeing such awesome styling on the forum!!

hmmmm, in thinking about this, i guess there aren't many trends i'm sitting out, but its not like I'm chasing the current trends, more like the current trends fit my style and my life.
~ midi's are the one thing i'm not wearing, but that's only because i don't really wear shirts or dresses, but if i did, the midi is exactly what i would wear.

I cannot do maxi or midi...I feel swamped and silly in anything too long, and it doesn't really suit my lifestyle but I do like the look on others. Ditto for fit and flare...I feel too young.

I also have to size down in anything oversized...I am busty and shortish and it's just not a good look on me. Plus I have this irrational fear of gaining weight if I am dressed in anything too comfy and loose!

I think I might be sitting out on most trends:). I know pastels are big for Spring/Summer but I won't be participating. I think I could work a bomber jacket into my style but they are just not flattering on my figure so out they go.

I think I'm also recumbent ordinary. So, I wouldn't say never, but sporty luxe isn't something I'm really trying to incorporate. And I don't think I'll ever really be down with sneakers in anything but super-casual outfits.

Also sitting out distressed denim, white pants, jumpsuits.

Kind of like the idea of harem pants, but I think that's just because they'd be like more glamorous sweatpants I could wear out in public, and I'm not sure I should give in to that urge.

And, in terms of Birkenstocks, I actually just ordered these.

Harem pants

Boxy unless it's so drapey that it doesn't look boxy
Pastels (unless it's sea glass green or pale blue)

I am loving sporty luxe and had no idea that was already a big thing in my style. But it makes sense, now that I am aware of it as a style.

I like distressed jeans to a point. I just caved on Just Say No June yesterday when I found a great pair of distressed, faded railroad stripe boyfriend shorts on sale at Madewell. They are ultra casual but will definitely get some wear this summer! I might even play around with styling them in a way that offsets their ultracasual nature and try them with heels and a silk top.

Peeptoe booties don't make a lot of sense for my climate. If it's warm enough that I want my toes exposed, I don't want that much foot coverage. If it's cool enough to want to wear booties, I want my toes covered. I've learned from even the Jeffrey Campbell Produce booties (they're perforated so more open than most) that they are not comfortable on hot days.

I have always loved pointy toes, so I'm glad to see them come back.

Oh, and I'm totally sitting out the high-waisted jeans trend. It will be hard to get me back into them -- they just look all wrong on my body shape.

Those I'm sitting out are legion, but include:

Birkenstocks (poison eye plus bad fit for my feet)
D'Orsay flats (true flats hurt my feet and D'Orsays won't stay on)
Peeptoe booties (love the look but impractical)
Crop tops (would try a cropped sweater to wear over a shirt, however).
Maxi dresses (not my thing)
Jumpsuits (fun look but too impractical for me)
Seasonally confused looks in general (my biggest poison eye...I am a practical girl at heart)

Trends I've adopted:

Sporty luxe
Ankle strap shoes
Pointy toed shoes
Cage sandals
Lots of white
Fluid fit, fluid fit, fluid fit!!
Oversized fit for some items
Boyfriend jeans
Semi-tuck (and how!)
Tube skirts (and how again!)

Trends I'd like to try, but haven't been able to embrace due to inability to find a flattering or workable version:

Bomber jackets (like them on others but haven't seen one I like on myself -- too unstructured, maybe?)
Loafers/ smoking slippers. (Great for my style but nearly impossible to fit on me.)
Moto jacket
Vest (would really love one of these, but so far, no luck)
Silky track pants (tried one pair and loved but they would not get worn in my climate enough)

Trends I've surprised myself by embracing:

A shot of neon (usually too strong for me, but I found a few that work, at least in summer)
Sneakers with dresses and skirts
Photographic scenic tee

Great question!! It made me think. I see that I have become quite a follower of trends, even though the backbone of my wardrobe is really modern classic -- jeans, tailored jackets, button up shirts, turtlenecks, and knit tops.

I am really enjoying some of the trends right now, many things I have had in my closet for over ten years are finally getting the love they deserve! These include lace tops, translucent tops, crop tops, and the whole boho thing.

Things I am definitely sitting out are boyfriend jeans, high waisted jeans, horrible acid wash jeans (these are all traumatic high school fashion memories)... also I think sandal boots are super ugly, and will likely go out of style soon, so I can't see spending the money.

On the fence about wedge trainers.... anyone else?

Birks and destructed denim are also on my list of trends that I will sit out. Flats/loafers hurt my feet so not planning to buy any new ones.

I'm sitting out a lot that others are too. Interesting that there is some consistency here? I also notice that many of my choices to sit out are body-type driven.

Birks: I've never really liked them, although I do like some of the flat sandals with simple cross straps that are Birks-inspired, but I have low-volume feet. They do not work for me.

Crop tops: I'm 50. Thin on top, but 50. Even a sliver of midriff is a sliver too much. I wear a bikini on the beach but off the beach I cover up. I will wear a cropped sweater over a longer top, but that is it.

Harem / dropped crotch pants: Too boho / RATE. I do like to lean RATE but in the context of tomboy, so I need some structure/tailoring to feel like myself. The JCrew Curator pants are kind of the perfect stand-in. They are slouchy "suit pants" that have a bit of dropped crotch but not a bit of boho.

Dorsay / Mules / Slides: Fall off my feet.

Jumpsuits: Don't suit my style.

Flared Midi skirts: They usually require a waist, and I am thick in the middle and short waisted, so these skirts (and fit-and-flare dresses) are out. My VC tube skirt is the only skirt I am wearing these days.

Wedge sneakers: Cute on others, but too obviously trendy for me. I'm not entirely sure what I mean by that, but when I have tried them on I just feel very obvious in them. I definitely won't be going there.

Caro, I'm wearing the heck out of my black and white Ash Genial wedges when weather/circumstances allow. My older Ash wedge sneakers seem more fall/winter appropriate (dark green suede), and I do plan on wearing them when the weather cools off again. I like wedge sneakers but I'm not sure how much longer they'll be on trend, so I'm going to wear them while they're hot!

Croptops--would never wear in public, but bought one to wear at home on
stifling days and love it. So does DH.
I would wear Birks if they had enough support for my fussy feet.
