What looks do you have a poisoned eye for?

And by poisoned eye, which I just made up, I mean you are biased against the look to where you can't give an honest objective opinion? I know we discussed this before in some context, but I am curious given the new trends (ski pants, waist surrendering, etc).

[ETA: I don't mean obvious fashion faux pas, but legitimate fashion statements that are generally acceptable or trendy (like ankle pants or maxi skirts, right now) that you just can't tolerate.]

I have a REALLY hard time looking at puffy sleeves and cap sleeves on anyone. I can force myself to see that they look okay, but on me, they are just awful. And I don't love them on many others, either.

I know Angie's is going to be PPL!

Hm. A LOT. Off the top of my head:

- waist surrender
- high contrast between skinnies and booties
- non-denim leggings
- printed silk pants (look like pajamas to me)
- strong shoulders
- 80s anything
-harem pants
-drop-crotch pants
- peep-toe boots/booties

White bottoms for the most part - this year is the first that I've even considered them to look anything other than unflattering on anyone but the thinnest of the thin. Still won't wear them myself though.

I can also agree with puffy sleeves and printed silk bottoms.

For me it is cowboy boots and some masculine shoes.. Not my style, so i prefer to say nothing

Purposely visible lingerie (especially ratty brastraps with racerback camis)
printed pants
peep toe boots (I categorize with sleeveless raincoats as WHY??)
Asymmetrical anything (and I know this one is popular) I am on team symmetry

Logo mania is the thing which drives me batty, I'm happy for people to sport designer clothes and be proud of their purchase but to wear a bog standard t-shirt with the designers name emblazened on the front is neither stylish nor fashionable IMO, espeically when a fake is available on market stalls up and down the country.

I am REALLY tired of seeing men in plastic flip-flops and shorts at restaurants unless it's a beach town.

I also really loathe boat shoes, but I'm probably scarred by frat boys wearing them in the 1980's. I know some people love them.

Julie, I have been de-toxed with regard to the ski pants! And I agree with you about logos.

I am also not big on polo shirts. But I haven't seen anyone wearing one on YLF, so maybe I'm not alone there.

Mo, my husband thinks Martha Stewart's sexy!

There's a whole bunch of looks I don't like for myself but I can usually
separate that out and judge the look as a total composition. Example:
I think the sleeveless trenchcoats are a stoopid idea but can make up
a very attractive outfit.

I guess I'm very conservative as to what I like to see for business dress but whether the outfit as a whole works is different than whether people think it's appropriate.

I also think that if the whole outfit is non-controversial, modern, basic and understandable then you can throw in one item on the above lists of horrors y'all have contributed and it will look intentional and interesting.
You can Alexa Chung just about anything.

Khaki Docker type pants on women. Ugh.
White pants that are sheer enough to reveal the thong under them.
Wide capri pants, especially when worn with orthopedic shoes.

I was talking more about things that may be fashionable enough to see on YLF, but that you personally can't take.

If we're talking fashion faux pas, then my list is a WHOLE lot longer, starting with butt crack visibility.

Right on, Una. Pant lengths and all sorts of garment lengths in general. Casual maxi dresses and skirts are part of the same "length poison".

Gear worn as casual wear.

Bootcut and wide leg corduroy pants.

Cheap rubber flip flops worn as shoes.

For the rest, I am very, very, very open. As much as I do not prefer cap sleeves, there are women on this forum who pull them off to perfection.

Ha ha! Angie, my pre YLF pink bootcut cord trousers (that I haven't dared wear for the last 2 years) are henceforth consigned to dog walking and gardening for their last few months/years of life!

I'm more open minded than I was. Especially as many of the 'sins' that I notice most (particularly wrong pant length) were committed by me in the past.

Some things I do still struggle to make my eye adapt to, but as there are so many instances where I have soon reversed my position I am going to keep quiet...

Hmm..mostly it is the PPL and neckline lengths (too short, too low) and the logos that turn me off...oh yeah and gear as casual..and crocs. Oh, also thongs layered with ultra low rise bottoms...bleargh.
To me, pretty much everything else is about style, stature, confidence and attitude.

ETA: Just read your entire post Una. I still stand by PPL; thong exposure and gear as casual count as fashion faux paus I would think.

I think, for " legitimate fashion statements that are generally acceptable or trendy," as you put it succinctly, I don't have much of a bias and like to think I'm pretty open. Although, ruffles and overly floral anything can put me over the edge Oh, and leggings as pants -- I dunno if these were ever legitimate, but I wish they would go away!

I have a poison eye (love that term!) for cullottes. It just brings back memories of midwest middle-aged women wearing them (usually in the summer) - usually white - with tennis shoes and t-shirts. It gives me the creeps just thinking about cullottes.

I feel I am pretty open to a variety of styles, even if I wouldn't wear them myself. I am completely unable to look past a few things though:

- body parts that shouldn't be exposed (butt parts, private areas)
- t-shirts with rude commentary
- dirty, stained, torn clothing in any setting other than manual labor
- awkwardly proportioned items
- holiday sweaters

Skinny cargos. To my eye they look like cargos which were accidentally thrown in the dryer. But I grew up wearing slouchy cargos, so that's probably why.

I have a poison eye for dresses on grown women that look, to me anyway, like they are designed for little girls. Cap or puff sleeves would be part of that style.

Not to mention wall to wall pink for young girls. Believe me, this is AWFUL if you have a daughter who prefers androgynous dress.

Hmmm, if I'm being perfectly frank, I'd say clothes that look too tight, or look cheap (I'm not talking about clothes that are cheap--I have plenty of those and wear them happily--just those that *look* cheap :).

I second (or third) the poison eye for little girl clothes on women, or women's clothes on little girls.

And I realize that I will have to wear some sort of poison-deflection shield if I ever find the perfect patterned pants and sport them on YLF :)!

Jonesy et al: I find it really jarring when I see a woman walking around in pigtails and her head turns and I realize she's about 45. Not the most open-minded of me but it's true.
