I recently got back from a trip and indulged in some fashion mags for the long plane ride there and back (three each way, woohoo!). I was thinking about subscribing to a couple, but wondering which ones you all find to be the most useful in terms of actual pieces that you would wear? Elle and Vogue seemed to be filled with totally outlandish unwearable pieces and/or "price upon request" items...I was flipping through all the pages of fetish gear and thinking, "Who wears this in real life?" I mean, other than perhaps in your bedroom or the Castro district? I couldn't imagine showing up at the office in 90% of the stuff in there. Marie Claire, In Style and Lucky seemed to be a little more practical, but still pretty pricey. Sadly, the one magazine I found most helpful was Redbook--there was an article in there about buying six pieces and mixing them in with wardrobe basics that most people already have. They had pictures of 30 different outfits you could make mixing all the pieces. I could see myself wearing pretty much all of those items and it was useful to see all the different ways of putting outfits together. Most of their stuff in there was actually affordable (H&M, Target, AT, Banana Republic, Nordstroms type stuff) and I wanted to get a lot of those pieces, like the Target Missoni shirt. I never thought of myself as a Redbook reader--I hate the feel of the thin paper and I always equated it with the "Good Housekeeping" type of mag filled with "how to spice up your marriage" and "what to cook for your picky kids" and ads for cover your gray hair dye and Chico's & Coldwater Creek. Previously I would never have picked it up because it had kind of a frumpy image in my mind (I just got it because I couldn't find anything else left at that magazine stand). But I was really surprised it appealed to me. I guess I am one of those "older moms" in their target demographic now. Sigh. LOL
