What is wrong with this outfit?

Yesterday, I decided to try on my only denim skirt. I am not a skirt person at all and this is my first skirt ever. I just dont feel fab in skirts and as you can see in this picture, something is not right. Even hubby thought it looked frumpy. Help me pinpoint the problem, fabbers! is it the length of skirt or length of the sweater?

Mona, I think this style of skirt is tricky. IMHO, the buttons date the skirt. I would be inclined to create a sleeker look with column of colour (including footwear) and add the colourful scarf. This could create a crisper, more modern look:)

I wear a top and skirt combination often. I think the ratio of the length of the top to the length of the skirt is too near to equal. A ratio of 2 to 1 is better. I would shorten the skirt a bit and wear a longer top. More in the direction of a tunic over a skirt.

I think the skirt is a bit dated. I would try no scarf and adding a belt. The column of color is a great idea, too.

Aha! it is the buttons and shape of skirt. Thanks for suggestoins Deborah, Erika and Thistle. I will play with this skirt a little more.

This skirt is a bit boxy, maybe a pencil denin skirt! Love the rest of the outfit!

Skirts can be tricky Mona, but don't give up. Is this a new skirt? Are you sure it's the right size? If it has belt loops you can try tucking and belting. The reason I'm asking all of this is because I have been wearing the wrong size skirt for way too long. The waist needs to be tight enough that it won't twist around and so that a top will stay tucked in. I was wearing mine too big and riding them low on my hips to get the length I wanted (to the knee). I could never figure out what was wrong.

Regarding the proportions issue, either a long top untucked or a shorter or tucked in top will give you different versions of the 1/3-2/3s rule. Because this skirt has buttons down the front, it might be nice to show the waistband.

I believe this skirt calls for chucks or a cashmere sweater. Or a turtleneck with whales on it and a rubber raincoat. I.e., this skirt is very preppy. I see you are running screaming from preppy maybe, however. In which case, maybe a soft grey tee and boyfriend cardigan and belt?

In my opinion you could work with the skirt in two ways.

A. The skirt is a little boxy, so to narrow down the overall proportion you could wear a more fitted sweater on top, or a top and a fitted jacket that nips in at the waist that adds some shape.

B. Wear a top of the same or similar shade as the skirt and tuck it in, wear a jacket or cardigan, fitted and with the front not closed to give a longer line. If you want to really extend the line you could wear dark boots too so that there's no break in color.

I think the buttons on the skirt make it a bit prairie muffinish. The lengths and colors look good to me though.

Yes, the problem is not that you cannot wear skirts; the problem is that this is a difficult skirt for anyone to wear!

To echo what the others are saying, I think it's the skirt - not you. Try a different style and fabric and I think it may work better.

I second JuneBug's ideas.... that would break up the solid, similar 'line' thats going on. Nice pieces, skirt may be a little dated, with the buttons, but maybe try them seperately with other things...

I will attest that a button front a line skirt is just not easy to wear. I have plenty of skirts that look just fine on me, but had one with button closure that just never laid right.

Hmm I think this skirt just needs to be more tapered. I don't think the top being long or contrasting is really an issue, so much as the skirt just looks like a big box Another thought: is it possible to spin the skirt and wear it with the buttons down the side?

I thought it looked great actually. Maybe a belt on the sweater to create a waist? But i like the skirt and its buttons and length. But then I would love to have one that went to m knees
