What is the most uncomfortable thing you have ever worn?

I think my absolute worst, not counting all the summer blisters as I wore in new sandals, was when I wore a skirt too tight and my back ached like I was going to die. I never knew a too-tight waist could do this, but it was agonizing and stopped the second I unzipped. Never again.

What a great question.

My feet are cramping in sympathy. How many summer blisters have I had? That body glide stuff is really helpful. If only I could remember to use it every time I need it.

But I think my most uncomfortable would have to be the "undo" I wore for a fancy party when I was in my early 20s. It took 47 hairpins and lots of spray to hold my not-quite-shoulder-length but very thick hair in some semblance of a roll. And the pain was of a hundred tiny pitchforks digging into my skull.

It wasn't long before I'd chopped my hair short again.

ETA: That should be UP do. Not UN do. Stupid automatic speller.

I remember falling for a 'bodysuit' blouse from VS some years ago. I wore it with pants (so no tights to separate it from my umm 'body'. Underwear was no match for this onesie.) It was a very long day. I'll take a loose shirt tail any day.

First would be shoes, I can't remember each pair but there were a few. I remember I wore a pair of navy blue pumps, a size too small with a navy print dress to my husband's college graduation back when we were still dating. Ugh. Horrible decision. One of biggest outfit regrets, besides my wedding dress and wedding hairstyle, which is another story.

Second would be a size too small underwear. Vanity Fair. Size 7, which is usually fine but these were a binding, tight hell.

An itchy yellow dress, with a big polyester frill that was sewn into it all the way down the front that itched all the way down my torso. I had to wear it to my sisters first communion and was crying by the time I got home to get it off. I was about 8....

I never wear anything itchy now...It made THAT much of an impression on me...LOL

My very last pair of shoes from Payless, as a teen in the 1990's. I was a bridesmaid in NYC and opted to go barefoot through the city streets rather than wear those darned shoes for another second. I never bought another pair from Payless again.

A rubberized long leg panty girdle because that's what we did in the 60's.
Even though I was a size 3 and didn't weigh a hundred pounds.

ETA: worse might be the frozen orange juice cans we rolled our hair on and slept on every night. My college roommate slept on her back and it was observed she looked like a torpedo.

A pair of black poly ponte pants that itched horribly all over my thighs. I had to run home to rip them off. If I hadn't been five minutes from home I'd have almost certainly ended up buying new pants. As a result I am still extremely leery of poly ponte

And lots of uncomfortable shoes, sadly.

Ill fitting shoes are the worst - its always great when you get home or to the car and you're bleeding all over your shoes. I've also had some underwear malfunctions, particularly for formal events. And I'm so glad that we have stretch wovens now. Too tight pencil skirts with no stretch can literally make it hard to breathe or sit.

Something called an "Unbelievabra" which supposedly smoothed out everything in your mid-section. The salesperson raved about how she wore hers constantly because it was so comfortable; she was also the person who told me that the sizing suggestions on the tag weren't accurate, so she would measure me herself.

When I tried to wear it, it took me a good 10 minutes (coupled with some rather unladylike language) to pull on and get everything re-positioned into more or less the right places. Wearing it was like wearing a tourniquet around my mid-section; it was actually so compressive, I had trouble taking a full breath. When I couldn't stand it any longer, I snuck into the ladies' room and, with the help of a pocket knife loaned to me by my husband, had to cut myself out of it. Needless to say, from that point onward, I embraced my back fat. But my husband still teases me about leaving my underpinnings in the garbage can of a public building.

These are great stories!

I forgot about the time I wore long, long, long glue-on nails for a Halloween party and discovered that it was impossible to zip and unzip my pants without yelping becausde any pressure on the tips of my claws hurt like bazingo. Or use my iphone because I couldn't get my fingertips on them. How do women do it?!

strapless bra... designer by a torture expert. It prevented me from breathing properly about an hour into the event for which it was purchased. Straight into the trash can when I got home!!

Anything tight gives me heartburn. And now back pain too. So I'm going to have to say the one time I tried skinny jeans was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever worn.

I'm sure there have been some awful shoes in my past, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Otherwise, the most uncomfortable thing I've ever worn was a pair of Spanx I bought to wear under a sweater dress. Not only did it squeeze me into a shapeless block, it was impossible to eat without feeling like I was going to be sick. I tossed the Spanx and the sweater dress and swore never to buy another piece of clothing that required specialized undergarments.

The most aggravating thing I've ever worn was a JCrew denim skirt. JCrew, who designs for a very straight figure, just doesn't work on my short waisted hourglass. That skirt would never sit on my hips but would continually creep up until it was sitting at my bra band. I'd wiggle it down, and back it would creep. Maddening! I mostly admire JCrew from afar these days.

I wore a wraparound dress in the 70's. If the wind blew, I was exposed, If I sat down, I was exposed, if I bent over I was exposed. I have never worn one since.

These stories are great! Gaylene, you made me laugh out loud reading about the Unbelievabra. Just the name is hilarious.

I've had my share of shoe/foot torture, too. But the worst for me was a strapless bra that kept working halfway up my, er, you know whats. Again and again I'd glance around to make sure no one was looking and try to reposition that stupid bra. (It's kind of hard to do that subtly.) And it'd creep right back up. I so enjoyed throwing it away when I got home.

There have been a bunch of painfull stilleto shoes, particularly for the weddings and such occasions, but I am sure most of us had done that at least once.
However, I have one rather unique experience: I used to do a lot of ballroom competitions in the past , for which we wear special costumes with lots of rhinestones. This particular one had a corset that went over the dress, all stoned and with lots of boning. It made my 24" waist no bigger than 22", but it was so uncomfortable and I could not exhale properly that my dancing suffered some from it.

Jumping back in to add another, only about something being too loose.

I can't find a pair of no-VPL panties in my size. S is too big, which trust me is surreal to say. So I was working out in my slightly-too-big panties undr a pair of loose workout pants, and I am pretty sure my underwear wound up everywhere BUT where I wanted it to be, finally ending as a sweaty wad right where I wanted it least. Gah.

Great (and painful) stories!

I have two. The first was while being the maid of honor at my sisters wedding and standing with the best man next to her at the alter while this interminable minister went on and on and on and on. I think she and the groom were kneeling at the time? But me and the best man were the other two members of the wedding party and had to stand. It was outdoors and the hot sun and extreme humidity combined with the Spanx and some horrible tight Jessica Simpson pumps and I really honestly thought I was going to faint. It was a near thing. My husband said at one point I went gray-faced, but I refused to pass out on my sister

The other was hiking in the highlands of Scotland in jeans (stupid) and being caught in a rainstorm (predictable). By the time we got a local bus home and I unpeeled myself out of the wet denim, my inner thighs had chaffed so much that the pores were bleeding :(.

Back in the 90's, one of those early full body shapers. It dug so hard into my shoulders, they ached. Another that comes to mind is a pair of nine west black suede pumps bought at an outlet. Only worn half a day, and afterward I developed a corn that hurt badly for weeks. Have never had a corn before or since. Never again!

Oooh, it's a tie.

In high school, I had this corset that I thought was super sexy (and which, in retrospect, was totally terrifying, with about eight inches of cleavage and armpit-boob galore). I used to sneak out of the house with a giant sweater over it so my mother didn't realize I was wearing it (and I wore it to school, which is embarrassing to remember). It also gave me the worst acid reflux. The WORST.

For my mother's wedding, I wore the single tallest pair of heels I've ever owned. Never again. I nearly broke my ankle walking down a flight of stairs.

These are hilarious! I especially love the image of Gaylene cutting herself out of her undergarments with a pocket knife.

Mine was a middle-school fashion trend -- tucking thick Champion sweatshirts into pre-stretch-era jeans, then poufing it out a bit and belting the whole thing. I think there was usually a turtleneck under there too for even more stuff around your midsection. Ugh.

Runner-up was a strapless longline bra I wore for my sister's wedding that was basically a corset. And there have also been many, many uncomfortable shoes.

These are a riot! My worst were the horrible girdles we had to wear to hold stockings up in the days before panty hose. In those days spandex was not around and there were lots of metal hooks and eyes to do up. If one came loose on the tight garment, it poked your stomach, not to mention boning. Then the metal garters bit into your thighs and the stockings in those days had no stretch, so would wrinkle on my legs and ball up in my shoes. In college I discovered the rather risqué garterbelts which made using the restroom easier but could still leave welts.

Spanx. I had to go into the restroom halfway through a fancy gala fundraiser and tear them off because I was getting serious pains in my squished internal organs.
