What is "So 2013"?

I've seen Angie use that to describe a few recent looks here. Would love to hear more specifics about what makes an OUTFIT so 2013. I know we've gone over some of the specific items - pointy shoes, lace, etc. - but what about proportions, patterns, and those details? Of Suz's outfits today, Angie picked 1, 3 and 5. And Sona's fab pattern mix also got this descriptor.

Anyone care to enlighten me, so I too can be of this year? : )

Oh thank goodness you asked this question Una - I've been wondering myself.

It's also led me to wonder if a person can still be stylish WITHOUT adopting any of the new trends of a season.

I don't know of the posts referred to, but to me, a loose silhouette is THE 2013 thing, top or bottom. Or both!

I do remember Angie said this about one of Tina B`s killer looks that involved pastel (mint) jeans and a silk Equipment tee.

I think it just means "so of the moment." And that means rocking and, I guess, owning, one or more 2013 trends in a way that feels natural. So for Tina, it was pastel jeans. For Sona, pattern mixing. For me, the looser, more relaxed and slightly unexpected proportions of the outfit.

Outstanding question, grasshopper, and I'm right along with you in the grass chirping out the same question!

I agree with Suz and, to me, much of it has to do with the looser feel and interesting silhouettes we're seeing here and elsewhere in pants, tops and skirts. With colors, I think there's also a wider, freer range of playful experimentation. I'll be waiting for a few answers and I'm so glad you asked.

I like the question wondering whether you can be stylish without adopting any trends. I wonder about that all the time. Like, if something is not so 2013 does that automatically make it dated? What makes something dated vs classic? Is dated just last year's trends that are over?

Oh what puzzles! If I could grasp the answers to those questions I would feel so much more confident getting dressed!

Well, Angie said this outfit of mine was so 2013. I think it's the plaid-on-plaid pattern mixing, and the patterned pants, which are skinny but not skintight.

I think we should all post our "so 2013" outfits. Maybe then we can figure this out.

Here are some more I thought of.

Major:

Fashion sweatshirts
Ironic, unexpected juxtapositions -- stiletto pumps with ripped jeans, camo army jacket with sequin skirt and beanie hat. Etc. Although the more you see looks like this, they are no longer unexpected.
Pastels
Pattern mixing
Ankle length pants
Distressed denim
Black and white

Less Widespread:

Overalls
Digital prints
Neoprene dresses and jackets

60s graphic Mod (Marc Jacobs)

I have quite a colelction of so 2013 outfits- one was distressed jeans with a lace/grey pullover and wedge sneakers.I will pull up the others and post pics. I don't think its buying new items for the most part except a bomber and wedge sneaks if you so choose its just using some of the items you have albeit in a different way. dresses with sneaks and a bomber. lace with distressed jeans. pattern mixing. hi lo hems.

Pattern mixing, distressed denim and pastels have all been around prior to 2013. But in 2013 they are still on trend. Same with ironic juxtapositions -- been around for a while.

Also, overalls started emerging in 2012 maybe earlier.

I don't think "so 2013" is meant as a pejorative by Angie, and I included pattern mixing as a 2013 trend because Sona's outfit was a big time pattern mixing outfit and Angie deemed it "so 2013."

I feel "so 2013" would more refer to trends that hit the big time in 2013 rather than fringe trends.

Maybe Angie will weight in here!

Oh, I don't think it was meant as a pejorative at all - I just want to know the secret! I have a sense of the items, but it seems there's also a way to put things together that is new and fresh. Your list really helps!

2013 is about two general style concepts:

Unstructured Structure
Irregular Item Juxtapositions

I think this is going to hold for a while. Mix up whichever trends tickle your fancy with or without the classics. YOUR way

Very interesting thread, and lots to think about. I really like Angie's answer that it is about Irregular Item Juxtapositions. It makes it possible for all of us to mix the items we already have in an unexpected way and be on trend,

Yeah, I take it to mean someone's outfit embraces at least one trend or updated silhouette.
