what is it exactly that's drawing me in?

I am trying to figure out why I keep coming back to 2 items I know aren't right for me, but I can't resist thinking about them. http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-COLO.....588e673dc8 and of course, the 'sexy' red dress http://cgi.ebay.com/SEXY-Red-D.....5644479470
Is it the architectural design? The color red? Both together? And more importantly - will the tunic top (option #3) quench these desires in a more appropriate, and likely to be worn, way?
Aargh. I feel like I'm my own worst enemy when I *really* like something that I'm sure isn't a good idea.

Mo, I can think of some occasions where a dress like this could be worn, but how do they fit your lifestyle?

yep - that's a good question! The long sleeve would work in winter over skinnies but I'd likely just look at the colorblock one hanging in the closet. That's why I thought maybe the tunic shirt is more 'wearable' with a similar vibe.
I guess the trouble is the strong reaction the others draw from me. It's like falling for a bad boy - you know you shouldn't but you can't help yourself LOL.

And there you've answered your own question! These dresses are like falling for the bad boy, thinking you can tame him. But, whilst I'm in the mood for playing devil's advocate - sometimes it works out, the bad boy is just a softie underneath. What is holding you back? Are they very expensive? I saw a photo of you in the cut-out shoulder dress and I thought you looked stunning - the dresses are great, that's why you can't stop thinking of them. Shame!

Perhaps this is one of those times when you're dressing for the life you wish you had, instead of the life you actually have? Are you wishing you had more places to go where you could actually wear those types of dresses?

Or, perhaps you're feeling like you do want to start changing your day to day style, and make it a bit more sophisticated?

Will you really wear that top? Especially since you don't tend to wear your dressier clothes now?

I'm not saying don't buy it - just be aware of what you're doing. It's great that you're asking yourself these questions!

I'm thinking what Tarzy said. You and I are a lot alike in surfing around and stumbling on some great find, I want then rationalizing a reason for needing it. I have been doing that with dresses lately, because I have two weddings coming up. Both of these pieces are gorgeous, but have you been reaching for a red dress that doesn't exist lately? Or this kind of top?

I call these kinds of purchases my "just in case" clothes - like, "Just in case Johnny Depp drops in for a casual dinner" or "Just in case my sister wins another Emmy".... I'm not saying we shouldn't buy stuff just because we love it, but I know we both have problems with all the fantasy clothing crowding our closets for that just in case moment.

Una, you crack me up. Tara, very valid questions and I'm not certain the answers. I never used to have to ask myself where I would wear something. I just had to like it in order to buy it. Well, now that I know better, it's haaarrrd. Wah.
And just so you get an idea of the rationalizing that goes on, I figure it could also replace my too short red satin cami top @@ Oh, and there's also the hole of no tunics in my wardrobe, only too short dresses worn as such lol. I'm sure I could find another rationalization if given a minute. Crazy, what I tell myself.
I am standing strong on both dresses simply because the only dress I need would be a casual woven for the rest of the summer here. But the tunic top is still whirling around like sugar plums in my head!

This is all online - I live sooo faaaar from real stores. Price isn't an issue; they are all reasonable, with the shirt costing the least (under $20). Simply wearability and the desire to not make purchasing mistakes are my concerns. I'm leaning toward getting it. I was serious about needing to replace my too short satin top and I truly have been needing and wanting a few tunics by fall.

I'm not going to be any help here, because I LOVE both dresses and I think they look fantastic on you! I am also one of those that has a wardrobe full of "just in case" items. I think that the fact that you are stopping to evaluate and mull over in your head what your motivation and draw is for these dresses is really a sign of growth in your wardrobe development process - LOL! (but I'm serious - it is!)
P.S. I'd snap up the top in a nano-second.

Mo! Don't wait on the Target dress! It's going to be gone in your size by the time it goes on sale, if it ever does. It's more practical for your uber casual lifestyle.

I love the long sleeved red top on you! The shoulder cutouts are so great. For me items like that are usually tempting because I like the way I feel when wearing it. I think that's ok sometimes!

FWIW I think it's the red first, and the collar details second, that hooked me. I put in a bid on the tunic top (#3). I had trouble styling the short cami it will replace (see awful attempt below!), and so I am already putting outfit possibilities together in my head.
As for the 'Target dress' - it's also on Overstock and has gone down exactly $0.50 ha ha. But at Overstock I can watch how many are left while I wait for prices to fall.

I love sexy dresses too but I always choose dresses that I can use a lot, for example, dresses I can use with a jacket for work and without a jacket for a date with hubby!

You can keep a nice dress for a date with your hubby, but no more then that.

As to your red dress, it seems a bit dated with the shoulder detail.. too 80's..
