What I'm doing tomorrow

I'm going to Second Time Around, and I'm going to pick up and try on a whole bunch of pieces that I wouldn't normally pick up--including things that look dated--and see what happens.

I'll report back on what I discover!

Wow, that's a lot more exciting than "I'm going to a seven and a half hour continuing legal education class." (What I'm doing tomorrow.)

I actually just took a bag of clothing there yesterday to sell. They took seven pieces, and I realized five were brand new, with tags. Guess I should have thought twice before purchasing! Good luck tomorrow!

Steph, do report back on how the sales go! I keep thinking of selling there, but they don't pay until/unless your stuff gets sold, so I'm just not sure. Yours is probably more high end than mine though.

Laura, Second Time Around is a renowned vintage store. Maya, I'm so jealous! I used to wear tons of vintage stuff, back in the day <getting all misty-eyed>. Now, I just don't have the time...

Maya, you are probably already aware of this, but just in case you aren't: as soon as you bring home your new clothing, put the dry clothes in your clothes dryer at the highest heat possible for at least 20 minutes. This (assuming your dryer gets to 120 degrees) will kill any bed bugs that might be on the clothing. I know bed bugs are a big deal in NYC, but they are issues everywhere, and thrift stores can be dangerous because there are so many people bringing clothing in from their homes. I actually put everything I buy--whether new or thrifted--in the dryer immediately.

As for me taking my clothes to Second Time Around, what I found annoying is they don't tell you how much they are going to charge for the clothes! They only tell you what they charged when it sells. I actually took back a Diane von Furstenburg dress that still had the tags on it. It retailed for $455, and I didn't want to leave it there without knowing what they would charge for it.

I was downtown yesterday and passed "our" Second Time Around, where Lisa found The World's Best-Fitting Jean Jacket, from Theory. Didn't have time to stop, more's the pity, but it evoked nice memories of our Philadelphia gathering!

Maya, that sounds fabulous. Will you take pictures from the dressing room and post your finds?

Eh, it was underwhelming unfortunately. I think I need to hit one of those unassuming vintage shops or the Goodwill near work. If you told me a few months ago that I would actively be seeking out dated pieces, I would have slapped you silly...

STA is still pretty current and perhaps not the best place to go. I did try on a heartbreakingly beautiful Nanette Lepore coat and will post pictures, but even used it was too $$$ for me right now.

Here's the NL coat. It even went with my shirt that day. The houndstooth coat in the background didn't fit, sadly.

Steph, I think you would have only received around $50 for the dress from what I calculated based on their policies. They mark it 30%-40% off, then you take home 30% of that.

Oh, that was beautiful (sob) Do you have a Clothes Mentor near you? They carry lots of mid to upper range consigned items for CHEAP! Be worth checking out if you can....plus they pay you up-front *no waiting* for an item to sell.....
