What I saw at the mall...

I had to stare, because I couldn't quite believe my eyes....

Two older ladies, I would guess at least 60 on a shopping trip together. Both wearing little quite-a-bit-above-the-knee dresses, one lacy and straight, the other light and full-skirted. Both wearing platform wedges with cork heels. Both with full make-up.

It was like one of those movies where teenagers swap bodies with their parents. I've decided MDAL anxiety only exists when you're young enough to give a damn what other people think. Roll on 60!

It wasn't so much the skin as the youthful styles of the clothes and shoes that caught my eye. The Bloggess wrote a great column about the evolution of body image, and concluded that older women own their awesomeness, and do what they please. I find that thought enormously comforting!

Wow Sharon! Thanks for the link, I laughed out loud. I am going to share it with my 78 year old mother tomorrow!

I am for freedom of clothing choice for everyone, not just the 12 to 34 year old set. So regardless of whether I like or disliked the way these ladies dressed, I would have admired their elan.

I feel better after reading that Bloggess post Sharon! I love it. Life is too short to not wear the short dress (or whatever it is we exclude ourselves from). I get it now. What a privilege for you to see those women - we can talk body acceptance 'til the cows come home but actually seeing it is much more powerful.

You know what's funny? That will be the future for the cute 20-year-olds I see walking around in the baggiest, frumpiest, most figure-hiding clothes -- think oversized tees and their boyfriends' sweatpants. In a couple of decades they're going to smack their heads and say, "Why did I dress to hide myself when I was so young and cute?" And they'll proceed in their middle-aged years to wear all the stuff others think they're too old to wear.

My recent sighting was: a couple pulling up in a white older Rolls Royce, both decked out in head to toe winter white themselves. The woman even had on a white fur and white hair in a poof. I couldn't help but stare at them!

Oh my goodness, I think I saw these same ladies at Tambourine Mountain last Sunday!

Even my husband felt compelled to comment, which shows how extreme these ladies were.

Still, I guess as long as they felt happy and confident, that's all that really matters in the end.
