What I exchanged the Hinge jacket for, and a pencil skirt question

I was looking for the Classiques leather skirt but my store never had it. So I tried this on:

and ended up taking it home to try out. The fit of the seamed skirts are not working for me this year, and after seeing Angie's post with Bei-jing, I thought I would give a leather one a whirl.

So am I the only one who wear pencil skirts with longer untucked tops? I find they sit really high on my torso and make me super short-waisted when I tuck - does that mean I just shouldn't wear them?

I do it, too. The pencil skirt I wore yesterday sit on my hips, not at my waist, so I didn't need to. I have a suit skirt that I absolutely can't tuck with, though.

I wear untucked tops and sweaters with my Halogen pencil skirts because the waist is a tad tight and I'm an apple so I have to cover some of the appleness. I have a suite skirt that is not as fitted so I can tuck.

I think we have similar figures- I never, ever tuck! But I love my pencil skirts. I got one of the Halogen skirts with my Hinge jacket return, I had to size up, but it's great for work and a great dark brown.

LPR200, we might! I'm an IT/rectangle, petite and busty (32D). Oh, and short-waisted with no hips or butt. This means that pencil skirts do not have that va-voom factor on me, plus I want them to be straight and not curve inward at the hem because I'm trying to balance my shoulders. Generally, if the hips fit, the waist is tight, and if the waist fits, the hips are too big. I can tuck with this skirt, but honestly I am always most comfortable untucked.

As long as the proportions look good and the skirt is slim, I don't think you need to tuck... let's see it!

It must be our Indian blood- that's pretty much my shape, but I love pencil skirts- they are pretty much the only ones I.
Did you check out the khacki Eli Tahari NAS dress? I had it hemmed and love it. It gave my rectangle with broad shoulders a nice shape.

Oooh, didn't realize you're also from India. My shoulders are way broader than most of my cousins, but other than that, I do feel like a "type" (did I mention poochy belly and scrawny calves?)...

Did not see that dress. Did you post a photo? Sounds like you love it!

I rarely post photos- I never have a camera with the appropriate mirror, but when our master bedroom redo is done, perhaps I will then!

Great skirt!

I was able to try the Classiques one and it was pretty intriguing, but seemed a little too long for me. You're shorter yet, and I didn't think it came it Petite. You could always have had it shortened though.

I chickened out -- worried about how it would look after sitting around in leather. But I can see from Bei-Jings photos how it starts to look like nicely broken-in leather.

Now the skirt is Unavailable

They have the Halogen skirt in our store - no 6, but I got a 4. What size are you in skirts? And I got the red Blue Essence pants in size 4! Yes, I'm bad. Will post a photo - I think they run big, and they fit me nicely... Can't wait to hear your review.

AG, I also had hip-wings with the Halogen seamed skirt this year. So it goes. But I can rock a J Crew pencil skirt like nobody's business. Highly recommended. (Sometimes, they're even TOO rectangular/straight through the hips. Very exciting--makes me feel like a real hourglass.)

I wear pencil skirts with untucked tops. I also tuck occasionally, but almost always wear a jacket over the top then.

I second Dashrashi's recommendation for J. Crew pencil skirts if you are straight-ish through the waist and hips and don't want the bottom to taper. I have several. I also have one pencil skirt from Talbot's that fits really well, but it tapers a teeny bit at the bottom.

I love that skirt and I can't wait to see it on! I wear my leather pencil skirt with an untucked gray wool sweater. I try to tame the leather by keeping everything else conservative (obv the opposite of Bei-jing's style with her leather skirt).

Yay untuckers! I am in good company. I also realized I can wear this with my blousy banded tops (I have two) for a faux-tucked look.

Dashrashi, love "hip wings" - that is so apt! This is one area where j. crew sizing sounds like it would serve me well. I do not have any of their pencil skirts, and would love to feel more hourglass-y. Let's see what I can pull off with this one first...

(brand new for fall--the colors are completely insane. Last year for this one I went for the petite (and up a size--so a P6 rather than my usual 4 (or occasional 2)). Best bet is to chat with a CSR for the item measurements in the size you're interested in.)

I don't mind an untucked top with a skirt. It's my preferred way to wear tops.

Una, that is a stunning skirt. As Rae suggests as long as the proportions are ok I think untucked can definitely work. I am thinking of Angie's recent post where she wore the orange, flowing top over skinny jeans... I could imagine a similar top worn untucked over the pencil skirt with heels which can create a nice, streamlined silhouette. Would love to see how you end up styling it.

I have maybe 6 J. Crew pencil skirts. Here are some examples of untucked looks, FWIW. The first is unlined heavy weight black cotton, the second is charcoal wool (looks like the same fit as that last skirt Dashrashi linked to), the third is a purple animal print in cotton (from the J. Crew factory store), the fourth is orange print in cotton, lined. I have found that I want a heavy weight wool or a patterned cotton for pencil skirts, as both minimize or disguise the front wrinkles that inevitably develop as you wear them.

I never tuck when I'm wearing a skirt. Might try it this fall, but my short waist looks better with an untucked (but slim) top.
