I’m being a bit of a forum hog today, but have thoughts that need exorcising!

There have been references in recent threads about the casualness of modern life, and the lack of opportunities to ‘dress up’. Like most folks, (but not Angie ) I’m going to be in jeans and t-shirts when I’m doing things like working in the garden or cleaning bathrooms - but otherwise, I strive for smart-casual outfits. Usually the ‘smart’ is my top, toppers, and accessories - since I’m a jeans and sneakers girl. However, there are times when I get to dress up. I CAN get away with smart-casual, but why not dress up - if even just a bit? For me it can be as simple as wearing a low heeled pointed toe flat and carrying a leather bag - instead of sneakers and a Uniqlo half moon sling.

I usually ‘dress up’ for weekly Bridge night at the Community Centre,
and once a week outings with my mother. I also dress up for ‘date nights’ with DH every other week - and try to match my outfit to the formality of the venue. Going to the hair stylist and visiting the aesthetician is also an opportunity for a little formality - even if I change into sneakers once I’m home. I like to dress up when I go shopping. I often ask for help from the SA’s and find that if I’m dressed up, I get better service and better results. Same goes for dental and doctor appointments.

There are a couple of annual events that happen regularly (usually around holidays) and one-off concerts or theatre events. And, of course, I love dressing up for travel.

Although I don’t believe in curating a wardrobe around a fantasy life, I do believe (to quote the ghost in ’Field of Dreams’) ‘if you make it, they will come.’ In other words, if you aquire a few special items, you will find opportunities to wear them. For example, this summer I attended a 4 part Bach organ recital series, and then a Jazz festival - and wore skirt outfits or dresses for the occasions. I enjoyed the music so much, I’m looking for more of these opportunities. Although I will go for the music, dressing up makes it extra special.

What do you ‘dress up’ for?
