What does it take to pull off a pixie?

Thanks to Raisin, Rae, and Shevia, not to mention Suz, Shannon and all our other short-haired fabbers, I am now pondering whether to chop my hair, but I fear the results will be horribly unflattering and nothing like my warrior-elf fantasies. J've done it before and not loved it, but after enough time passes, I decide to blame it on the cut and not my lack of pixie-wearing ability.

What's required? Long neck, perfect features, beautiful skin, oval face? Should I just not go there?

I don't think a long neck is mandatory--a pixie could potentially make it look even longer. I'd say delicate, feminine features and an oval face shape are pretty significant, though. Women like Charlize Theron and Sharon Stone pull it off despite not having oval faces, but both have very delicate, feminine features. I love pixies, but with my strong nose, really short hair just doesn't work. I just have to admire from a distance!

ETA: I know that as part of Rae's pixie decision there was a major back and forth on which faces work for pixies.

Not sure but I think you need subtle facial features. Me and my big nose are not going to cut it. I personally think you have found the perfect haircut for you and if it is not broken...

Nope, me and my big nose... I can provide with pictorial evidence too. Look at my sad picture at the NYC meet up last year. Greg caught the horror first hand. At least the hair looked good.

I think the main thing is to not have horrible ears. After that, I have found hat using the hair care products my stylist recommends really does make a difference. And I book my haircuts three months in advance so that I never get that awkward "need a haircut" stage. I love my longer on top pixie!

I understand why you are wondering about this. There are great pixie cuts here. I love that this cut can be edgy or more classic. After a really great cut, I think that committing to the look may be a big part of what makes it work.

I have never gone shorter than a bob and right now my hair is shoulder length, so I'll be interested to hear from those with more experience.

Attitude, and good facial bone structure. I would NEVER attempt it with my long face and larger nose.

Ah, you know, test it with a wig. I could not do it myself, because I have a lot of hair and the thing wouldn't lay flat.

Fine features, nice ears (mine are big, usually why I choose not to get one!). Someone posted on Rae's thread about the distance from the bottom of the ear to chin being 5.5cm or less as the ideal?

i never done a pixies cuz i have fatty checks even if i am skinny and u know that funny fat near you chin hahah Cachetona is what we call it in spanish..
i believe is so small and structured faces
tiny frame body
and strong cheekbones

so i believe it depends who u ask ...i will sugguest to talk with ur hairstylist

K I'd join that club, and I could probably wear a pixie but then I'd lose a lot of my precious curls I think the cut itself is also going to play a huge part in the success of said pixie Una. I've had very, very short hair when I was in high school, hmm wonder if I can find a photo of that...

Her hair is cute! I think it's not that far off from what you have Una, you could do that. I posted my shortest hair ever on my other thread. It wasn't really a hit with me. And then it takes SOOOO long to grow out, it makes me hesitant to go short again.

My stylist's philosophy is similar to Aida's. She said that, if the CUT is good, then the length doesn't matter. I definitely don't have a long neck, or a tiny body frame, or razor sharp cheekbones.

Some questions my stylist asked me were what I liked about a shorter cut, where I wanted the volume, what parts of my face I liked and wanted to stand out versus what I didn't like. Maybe discussing those types of things with your stylist would help.

Love Kate's hair! It's fine and blonde, so it falls differently than mine. I think I am going to seek out some pictures. My hair will stick straight up if cut too short, but my stylist has been with me 7 years so she should have a good handle on it...

Honestly, I think it takes attitude more than anything else. I've had pixies that others really loved on me, but I never felt really confident in them so I wasn't happy. But I've seen people with fine features or prominent features both look FANTASTIC in short cuts. FWIW, short cuts are as different and varied and flattering for different faces and features as are medium and longer cuts. I firmly believe that there is a short cut to flatter everyone. That doesn't mean everyone wants one, just that it is possible for everyone to look great with shorter hair.

I'm with Scarlet. I LOVE your hair the way it is, Una. Do not go short!

I think I am the only one on this forum who is not fond of Kate's hair. I find the unkempt style and colour unflattering. All that hair in your face makes no sense to me. I would love to see Kate sport her natural brown shade with a cut that showcases her pretty face!

Something to add. I did it in the past & my hair is so soft & fine that it didn't hold any kind of style. No matter what I did. It just laid flat. Even if you have better hair for it than me, which almost everyone does, I think it takes more time to style. You can't just wash it & go. You need to use product & a blow dryer. I think it looks fab on many people though.

Really, Angie? Nothing could be improved? That doesn't seem possible! it's a cut of my own invention, over time, involving lots of Aeon Flux images, so I am a little tired of it. Although I highly appreciate that you feel so strongly and positively about it - that's quite a boost!

Rae, how are you liking your short cut now that you're more settled in it?

For me its like kate lanphear doesnt care that she's pretty and just does what she likes.I find her nonchalonce very likeable.
