What do you wear when it is too hot for pants? Not business wear.

I don't have much to wear on really hot days. I don't like jeans as they are too hot & even pants & clamdiggers can be too. I mean when you don't want a waistband so probably skirts are too hot too. That leaves only dresses I suppose. Wondering what to wear when it gets really hot. It can be dressy or casual. Post pics if you want.

Dresses, definitely, preferably a looser style to keep air circulation. Knits are comfy but I find that wovens are cooler and less heavy in the heat. Angie doesn't like casual capris much but they do serve a purpose for most of us. I think most ladies can wear shorts, they just have to find the most flattering cut and length for them.

Well, if waist bands bother you, then dresses are answer for sure. For casual wear, I would go for a simple jersey sleeveless dress, like in this Angie's post:

For slightly dressier events, a nice sundress would do.

Elle, as you know we have just been through a hot summer. My default became sleeveless, knee length dresses. Usually a a straight line (I don't like flared skirts) and flat or heeled footwear depending on the occasion. I certainly haven't nailed it and will be summer shopping on line during our winter so I am much better prepared for next year.

Elle, i've just posted some pix of what I find most comfortable for casual wear in the extreme heat. For formal occasions.I have linen and lawn dresses that skim the waist. Happy hunting!

Thanks everyone. I didn't have anything before my trip to very hot Australia & had to borrow some dresses while I shopped & had to settle on some maxi dresses because at least they weren't mini. One of them isn't too bad. I will post pics. I also found a knee length & midi length but I don't know if they are for every day hot weather. They might be a little too dressy. Lantana did you do a new post of the pics? I can't see them here. Thanks.

I just wear knee length skirts, a sleeveless (woven) top, untucked and completely open sandals. I would try dresses but I have a devil of a time finding ones that fit properly. You're tall, too, aren't you? But you're young so you have a lot more options than I do.

If I remember correctly, Joy likes to freeze a damp scarf and then wrap it around her neck to keep cool.

Shift dresses like this that are easy to simply add a great pair of shoes, necklace or cuff/bangle bracelet.

I agree with light loose fitting dresses for the really hot days but also like to wear shorts that are a size or two too large belted low. It is a very casual and comfortable look for errands and hanging around.

I like heavy shift dresses that don't need a slip. Denim is ideal, as is heavy linen. Claire is right about the damp, even frozen damp cotton neck scarf. It can keep one cool for hours. I buy cotton bandanas, wash them a few times to soften, and twist and knot them.

Cotton, rayon, or linen dresses, knit linen tops, cotton short shorts... wash and repeat? Pretty much what I wore this September and August.

I also like dresses. Linen ones in particular. I also really like linen pants or linen walking shorts. I particularly like the pants because they protect my legs from the sun beating down on them in super hot weather. The examples are both from JJill ( where I get most of my linen ). The second pair are a draw waist.

Additionally, I have some linen boyfriend shirts ( again from JJill ) that I wear just over my bra or a Second Base demi cami. It feels as if I am wearing nothing. Angie recommended these years ago and they changed my life ! You don't feel them on, they are that lightweight. They also come with thicker straps. JJill has linen tank tops too.

I am not sure where you live and unlike Rae, we don't tend to have super hot weather for months where I live . But I do like having a small capsule for times like that here in the Northeast when we have heat waves. My capsule is 90% linen and dresses and then a couple of linen pants and 2 linen boyfriend shirts. I also have some very lightweight woven cotton stuff. And like Rae said, wash and rewash.

I own the dress in #6, in green. It is 100% linen and loose and the most comfortable one I have for searing heat. I like the sleeves, again, when it is super hot, I don't want the sun beating down on my skin ( that is just me ). My sister owns 7 and loves it and I just threw in 8 : ) All JJill.

PS ...If you want linen walking shorts and can't find them, buy a pair of pants and cut them .

I love 6 and 7.

I have a few Second Base cami as well. I mostly use them in our hot summers when I need some décolletage coverage, ontario can be over 100 C with humidity

Claire reminds me that skirts are really great in the summer too. Aline or full cotton or linen skirts that hang from the hips and work with woven or knit tops are super handy in the summer, because you get a nice breeze and its much cooler than shorts IMO. You can even go for a longer length (I prefer around the knee or just below); as long as its a fuller shape you'll get airflow and you won't have to worry about flashing anyone or having to wear fancy underwear.

i have a couple of pairs of those skorts that are a complete skirt over shorts, for more active days where you need to be able to do s lot of physical work. The shorts avoid the thigh rub and sweat problem yet they still look like a skirt so are flattering.

I do like wearing pants and denim in the summer. I like Boyfriend jeans because they are loose, you can roll them, and I get mine in 100% cotton. I also like knee-length shorts. What's key is not wearing super-tight anything.
