What do you wear under a boatneck?

Lately I have really been liking boatnecks because they are flattering to a larger bustline without showing cleavage. However it is a little nippy outside and I often want to wear something underneath for warmth, but it is hard to find something that doesn't ruin the neckline. Do other people have a good solution here? I suppose a boatneck undershirt? But that's not so easy to find is it? Am I missing something?

What about a cami - or do you find that the straps show?
I suppose it depends on how wide the boat neck is. Maybe a thicker strap undergarment that matches (in colour) the neckline of the boatneck?

Well, I wear boatneck tops all the time and my bra straps already "ruin" the neckline by peeping out sometimes. My solution is to wear a black bra, not a nude one, so that it looks like the straps are showing intentionally. I've tried wearing camis and undershirts with boatnecks, and nothing ever looks good. I can tolerate the single bra straps showing, but not double cami straps and bra straps. And an undershirt with a thicker strap just looks bad. For me, it's a bra only with boatnecks. No underlayers.

What about putting a layer on top if you're cold? A cardigan?

A shirt. I like boatnecks layered over shirts, although I don't wear the combo myself that much any more. I prefer the un-layered look for my style. I don't layer blouses and shirts under pullovers that much at all. I prefer to layer over with a jacket or coat.

With cami - I always wear a cami - white BF jeans and gold belt, blush moto and gold pumps. My cami straps do not show.

Aziraphale, feels therapeutic to know there is someone out there with the same issues. Yes, till now I have been wearing black bra and black cami, but I feel rather the same that it is somehow one thing if the bra strap shows, but another when it becomes a double strap.

Angie, do you mean a button-down shirt? I wish I could see your outfit. It sounds lovely. I am crazy about that blush moto, btw.

It sounds like maybe I better start making peace with a jacket on top.

I was also going to suggest a button-down shirt or a turtleneck, Scarlet. And as a jacket fan, I vote try a jacket too:-)

I either wear nude bra and cami, but I like the idea of the black ones. Will try that soon.

Also, layering over button down is one of the ideas I use.

If you have one or 2 faves and have the patience, you can add the lingerie strap keepers. Not too practical to adapt tons of cotton tops. But I use these for my "better" tops. I don't like strap showing. Lots of times I think the boatneck is not that wide--I try to avoid the off-the-shoulder look--but sometimes they seem to grow.

I guess it must depend on the width of the boatneck? My bra straps never show with mine. I wear a regular bra and sometimes a cami for warmth (depending on temps). I also like the look of a boatneck layered over a shirt, though I rarely actually wear this. Boatnecks look great with jackets over top. And they can work with a T-neck, too, underneath. Another thing I do in winter is scarves at the neckline if I am cold.

This is a great question! I like boat necks too, but tend to feel cold when my neck is exposed. I'd like to try some of these ideas.

Boat necks are a favorite of mine too! So much so that one of my friends jokingly calls them K-necks.

I wear a cami under mine. I also wear a classic tank with the inch wide straps, but only if it is a fairly open boat neck. Not a slit neck, which is high up, but a boat neck that has a bit of a dip down to it. The straps show a bit on the sides and I let the tank show a bit on the bottom, which I think makes for an interesting texture and color addition.

I wear a bra only or bra and cami ... and if the straps show so be it. I often wear an orange bra for the strap peek so it looks intentional! I have tried Angie's button up shirt and had fun with it too. Love K's idea about the tank though, always a fun new way to think about wearing something on YLF

My bra straps always show with boatnecks. I dislike it and avoid boatnecks as a result. I wonder why they don't show for some and do for others of us?

Unfrumped, that is a good idea. I didn't know the right word for that kind of thing and wasn't sure how to construct one. I want to wear a certain sweater for a presentation coming up, but I don't want my bra strap to show, and that would be a good solution.

Ariadne, I think maybe my shoulders are slightly narrow compared to average? Bra straps are often set too wide for me, which is my clue.

K, that sounds like a great solution for the ones that aren't too long. Sporty-preppy-cute.

Angie, thanks for checking back in with the clarification. I'll have to try on some shirts and turtlenecks together with my boatnecks and see if there are any winners.

I know a jacket can work too, I am just kind of into cuddly knits these days.

I don't mind my straps showing with boatnecks. I think it's actually *pretty* when your straps are some bright color, like red, pink or purple, and contrast with the tops. I do mind -and a lot- straps showing under racerbacks, strapless tops or open back tops.
